TEMPE, Az. – The first outdoor track meet of the 2017 season is in the books. After a highly successful indoor season, the Indiana Hoosier track and field team flew west to take on the best of the Pac-12 Conference at the Pac-12 v. Big Ten Invitational. The meet saw several field athletes climb into the record books for their respective events.
In her first meet competing for the Hoosiers in the 2017 season, Sydney Clute took first in the pole vault. She was perfect through 4.42m (14-6), which tied the school record. Clute went on to smash her school record, winning the meet with a clearance of 4.55m (14-11), a new Arizona State facility record. Rachel Mather finished fifth in the event with an outdoor personal best mark of 4.02m (13-2.25). Mather became just the sixth Hoosier vaulter to clear four meters in outdoor competition.
Treyton Harris carried the momentum from a tremendous indoor season into his first outdoor meet of his sophomore campaign. On his first attempt in the long jump he leapt 7.76m (25-5.5), easily propelling him into the lead. After six rounds of competition his mark still stood as the furthest jump, securing the meet record and a victory for Harris. He now ranks eighth in school history in the event. Jenna Jungels finished third on the women's side with a jump of 5.84m (19-1.75). Ari Nelson took fifth with a mark of 5.63m (18-5.5).
Willie Morrison continued his winning ways, capturing gold in the shot put with a throw of 19.21m (63-0.25). Morrison had a spectacular sophomore indoor season, winning a Big Ten Championship and earning Second-Team All-America honors in the event. Fellow teammate David Schall took fourth in the shot with a throw of 18.20m (59-8.5), moving him up to eighth in school history. On the women's side, Khayla Dawson finished fourth with a heave of 15.65m (51-4), squeaking into 10th on the all-time Indoor outdoor performance list.
Eric Bethea took first in the triple jump competition. Just two weeks after earning Second-Team All-America honors in the event, the Big Ten Champion established a new Pac-12 v. Big Ten Invitational meet record with a leap of 15.77m (51-8.75). His mark moves him into seventh all-time in school history.
Paul Galas was the runner-up in the high jump. He carried a clean sheet through the first three rounds. His first miss came at 2.10m (6-10.5), but he cleared the height on his second attempt, marking the last height we would clear on the evening.
Kyle Burks finished as the runner-up in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:22.70. In his first collegiate outdoor track and field meet, William Session secured fourth place in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.40.
IU claimed the top two spots of the women's 800m run. Kendell Wiles started her season with a win, crossing in 2:09.64. She was followed by runner-up Kelsey Harris, who finished with a time of 2:10.08. A trio of Hoosiers scored points with top eight finishes in the men's race. Jordan Huntoon led the way with a fourth place finish, crossing in 1:50.37. Joe Murphy took fifth with a time of 1:50.56 and Cooper Williams notched eighth with a time of 1:51.25.
