WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Indiana University men's basketball team upended the Iowa Hawkeyes, 95-73, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. The 95 points are the second-most points ever scored by a team in the Big Ten Tournament, just three shy of the record.
Leading the way for the No. 10-seeded Hoosiers in the victory over the No. 7-seeded Hawkeyes was James Blackmon Jr., who scored a team-high 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-5 from 3-point territory. Blackmon has now made 200 3-point field goals in his career, tying him for fourth place on the IU career 3-point field goals made with Tom Coverdale.
Freshman De'Ron Davis scored a season-high 15 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting off the bench for the IU, while sophomore Thomas Bryant added 11 points in the victory. Devonte Green rounds out four Hoosiers in double-figures, netting 10 points while grabbing five rebounds.
It was Iowa that took a five point lead at 11-6 with 16:13 left in the first half before the Indiana offense shifted into gear, outscoring the Hawkeyes 9-2 over the next three minutes to take a 17-13 lead. A 3-pointer by Iowa''s Brian Bohannon put Iowa on top, 19-17, with 12:32 on the clock in the first half. But IU used an ensuing 12-0 run, capped by a Curtis Jones 3-pointer, to take the momentum midway through the half.
The lead hovered around 10 points until Iowa's surge at the end of the half meant Indiana took a 43-40 lead into halftime.
At the start of the second half, two layups on the first two possessions for Iowa made it a 44-43 Hawkeye advantage. A Juwan Morgan free throw and a Blackmon 3-pointer put IU on top, 47-44, only to see Iowa retake the lead at 48-47 with 17:12 left.
From there, Indiana took control of the game once and for all, going on a 25-6 run to put the game away and take the 72-54 lead with 9:50 left. The run would extend to 48-18 with IU take a 95-64 lead with 2:40 left.
The Hoosiers will be back in action on Friday evening, when the team plays No. 2-seeded Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals. The game will tip-off at 6:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network.
