STANFORD, Calif. – The Indiana track and field team sent 10 distance runners to the prestigious Stanford Invitational. The women's 5,000m run stole the show, providing the Hoosiers with three of the four fastest times in school history.
Katherine Receveur broke yet another school record once held by Michelle Dekkers. In her first outdoor meet of the season, Receveur cruised to a third place finish in the women's 5,000m run with a time of 15:46.33, besting Dekkers' mark of 15:53.12. The record had stood for nearly 28 seasons.
The race started at a much slower pace than expected as the lead pack ran the first 3,000m at a 16-miunte 5k pace. Receveur stuck with the lead pack for the entirety of the race, never falling outside of fifth place. In the closing three laps the pace quickened, but the sophomore was up to the task. She kicked at the end to cross in third place.
Maggie Allen ran a tremendous race in the second heat of the 5,000m run, taking fifth with a time of 16:00.48. Her mark ranks third in school history, trailing only Receveur and Dekkers. She finished 21st overall in the event.
Running in the third section of the women's 5,000m run, Brenna Calder recorded the school's fourth fastest time in the event. Her time of 16:10.77 was good for sixth place in her heat and 34th overall.
On the men's side, Jason Crist was the top Hoosier finisher. He took ninth in the second section with a time of 14:01.47. Bryce Millar, also running in the second heat, crossed in 14:09.88, good for 15th.
In the third section of the men's 5,000m run, unattached Ben Veatch was fifth to cross with a time of 14:02.08. He was followed by Jeremy Coughler, who finished seventh, with a time of 14:04.51. Matt Schwartzer finished in 14:07.70, good for ninth. Finally, Kyle Mau was 13th with a mark of 14:11.50.
All five Hoosier runners, plus Veatch, finished in the top 40 of the highly competitive 5k field.
Chanli Mundy finished 25th in the second heat of the 10,000m run, 55th overall, with a time of 35:04.84. Haley Harris took 71st overall, 11th in section four, of the 5,000m run.
The Indiana University track and field team will be back in action next weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee for the Tennessee Invitational.
