Indiana’s senior class of 2016 acknowledged
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana field hockey team conducted their 2016 end-of-season banquet last Saturday evening at the Henke Hall of Champions, a bittersweet closure on the Hoosiers' past season. Along with recognition of this year's outstanding senior class—Kate Barber, Morgan Dye, Malia Fujisawa, and Mollie Getzfread—the Hoosiers announced their 2016 team award winners.
It came as no surprise when senior Kate Barber received the Hoosiers' Most Valuable Player honor. She adds it to a series of awards acknowledging her final season, in which she set Indiana records for goals (18) and points (38) on the way to becoming IU's second first team All-American in program history. Her start to the season was the best in the nation, leading the pack with 15 goals in the Hoosiers' first 10 games.
Freshman midfielder Andi Jackson took home this year's Most Improved Player award. Jackson started the season as a support player but, as the season progressed, she saw a steady increase in playing time. By season's end she was in the starting lineup, holding down the wide midfield for the final three games of the year.
The final team honor, Indiana's Hustle Award winner, was too close to call. As such both Dye and Getzfread received the award, and for good reason. The senior duo played crucial roles in both attacking and defensive corner units, most notably with Dye as the defensive fly and Getzfread on the stick stop. They combined for 3 goals and 10 assists on the year, both receiving Academic All-Big Ten honors and recognition as four-time members of the NFHCA National Academic Squad.
Additionally, the Hoosiers introduced their team captains for the 2017 spring and fall seasons. Elle Hempt returns for her second year of captaincy, with senior Taylor Pearson and junior Nora Aucker joining the leadership group.
The evening ended with the presentation of the class awards. Last season's freshmen received their varsity letter jacket; the sophomores earned an Indiana field hockey blanket; juniors went home with a framed "block I" varsity letter; and the seniors were awarded their class rings.
