ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A leadoff home run by senior Tony Butler was all the offense needed in Indiana baseball's (20-15-2, 7-5-1 Big Ten) 1-0 victory over the 13th-ranked Michigan Wolverines on Friday evening.
Sophomore Jonathan Stiever (2-2) picked up the win following a 7.1 inning performance that included seven strikeouts. He scattered six hits in the shutout. Sophomore Tim Herrin picked up his second save of the season with two innings where he held the Wolverines hitless.
The home run was the first this season for Butler, who finished the night with two hits. Senior Craig Dedelow, sophomore Matt Lloyd, sophomore Ryan Fineman and freshman Matt Gorski also tagged hits in the effort.
Butler took Oliver Jaskie's second offering of the game to left-center field for a leadoff home run to quickly give the Hoosiers' a 1-0 lead. Michigan set itself up with runners on first and third with one out in the bottom of the first, but Stiever was able to force a 4-6-3 double play to escape the jam.
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the fourth inning, but three-straight strikes from Stiever got IU out of the frame unscathed.
Indiana loaded the bases in the sixth inning when junior Laren Eustace led off with a walk. A fielder's choice by senior Craig Dedelow and walk to sophomore Luke Miller filled the bases before Michigan picked up two strikeouts to prevent IU from adding to its lead.
The Hoosiers' outfield helped Stiever coast through a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. Eustace left his feet for a catch in center for the inning's first out, while Dedelow went airborne to snag a ball fading towards the left field line to close out the frame.
Freshman Matt Lloyd doubled with two away in the eighth inning but was stranded.
Indiana and Michigan resume tomorrow with first pitch set for 2 p.m.
