ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Indiana Softball (22-27, 8-11 Big Ten) dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader at No. 19 Michigan (36-10-1, 16-3 Big Ten), falling to the Wolverines, 7-1 and 2-1.
No. 19 Michigan 7, Indiana 1
In the day's first game, the Wolverines used a pair of homers and a trio of passed balls to come away with a 7-1 win. In the circle, Megan Betsa tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five.
Indiana's offense was led by 2-for-3 outings from juniors Rebecca Blitz and Rachel O'Malley.
Blitz led off the game with a single through the left side and made it to third on a pair of groundouts, but she was left stranded.
Michigan's Kelley Christner started the home half of the first with a double and advanced to third on a Hoosier fielding error. A walk to Faith Canfield put two on before both runners scored on a pair of passed balls to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers looked to answer in the second as O'Malley and freshman Katie Lacefield singled to lead off the frame, but a double play and groundout ended the Hoosier threat.
Canfield pushed the Michigan advantage to 3-0 in the third as she sent a solo homer to right center. Redshirt sophomore Emily Kirk stepped into the circle in relief of sophomore Tara Trainer with two away in the third, but Michigan's Madison Uden knocked a two-run shot to make it 5-0. Uden, whose knock was her first career home run, is the younger sister of Indiana junior Taylor Uden.
The Wolverines added two more in the sixth on another passed ball and an RBI single by Courtney Richardson.
Indiana loaded the bags in the final inning after Uden was hit by a pitch, O'Malley singled and senior Kayla Mathewson walked. In to pinch hit, junior Sarah Thompson put the Hoosiers on the board as she scored Uden on an RBI groundout.
No. 19 Michigan 2, Indiana 1
In the second game, Indiana took a 1-0 lead into the fifth, but Michigan rallied to sweep the doubleheader behind a pair of solo home runs.
Freshman Emily Goodin had a solid outing in the circle, tossing 5.1 innings and allowing just five hits while striking out three. At the plate, freshman Gabbi Jenkins and Bella Norton each picked up a pair of hits.
Norton gave the Hoosiers an early 1-0 lead in the second, doubling down the right field line to plate Lacefield, who had reached on a fielder's choice.
Indiana attempted to cushion the lead in the fifth, loading the bags with no outs on Jenkins' second hit of the day, a single by Tsirigos and a reach by Uden on a sacrifice bunt attempt. However, a foul out, a fielder's choice and strikeout from Tera Blanco left the bases packed.
Blanco earned the win for the Wolverines as she went 6.0 innings, surrendering seven hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
The Wolverines tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth as Alex Sobczak knocked a solo homer to left.
One inning later, Michigan took the lead as Aidan Falk hit a one-out solo home run to left center. Trainer stepped in to the circle in relief and retired the first two batters faced to limit the damage but the Hoosiers went down in order to end the game.
IU and Michigan will wrap up the series on Saturday at 3 p.m. live on Big Ten Network.
