STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Over the next three days Penn State University will play host to the 2017 Outdoor Big Ten Championships. A total of 50 athletes from Indiana are scheduled to compete in the meet.
The men's team will look to duplicate the success of the indoor season, when the Hoosiers took home the Big Ten Championship trophy. The women's team, who finished fifth at the SPIRE Institute, looks poised for improvement.
Indiana's men's track and field team has captured 12 team titles during the outdoor season, but have not been in the winner's circle since 1991. The 12 team championships rank fourth in the Big Ten. The women's team owns two Big Ten Championship team trophies, with titles coming in 2000 and 2001.
Of the 50 athletes that the Hoosiers brought on the trip, 23 of them are seeded inside the top 10 in their respective events. With the top eight in each event scoring, IU will make its mark on the scoreboard early and often.
Three athletes on the women's side rank as the top seeded competitor in their event. All-American Katherine Receveur leads the 5,000m run group by over three seconds. She will also contend for the gold in the 1,500m run. Two-time All-American Sydney Clute is the heavy favorite in the pole vault. Her clearance of 4.55m (14-11) is over a foot higher than the next jumper. Finally, freshman Khayla Dawson has the furthest shot put of the season.
The men's team returns a handful of Big Ten Indoor Champions. Willie Morrison claimed first place in the shot put and will once again be in contention. A season ago, as a freshman, Morrison placed fourth at the Outdoor Championships. Eric Bethea, the Big Ten champ in the triple jump, will look to defend his crown. He is currently seeded fifth. Treyton Harris, the Big Ten Athlete of the Championships in the winter, will look to defend his long jump title. He also finished second in the high jump.
The meet will begin at noon on Friday with the first leg of the decathlon, the 100m dash. Andrew Huber and Chase Pacheco, both Big Ten point scorers, will be among the 15-man field. The field events will also kickoff at noon with the women's hammer throw. Nakel McClinton is the second seeded thrower. Last year in Lincoln McClinton finished as the runner-up to former teammate Laura Schroeder.
The remainder of the track events on Friday will consist of trials, with the top nine of each event advancing to the finals on Sunday. The final running event of the night will be the men's and women's 10,000m run. The women's race will be first with an approximate start time of 7:30 p.m. followed by the men's race at 8:15 p.m.
Saturday's slate will begin much earlier in the morning. The men's decathlon will resume at 9:30 a.m. with the 110m hurdles. Mirroring Friday, Saturday's track slate will consist mainly of timed trials. The final two races of the evening, the men's and women's steeplechase, will be run as a final.
Sunday's action will be loaded with the conference's best runners going head-to-head for Big Ten gold. The championship races can be viewed on BTN2Go starting at 1:45 p.m. on Sunday. IU, based on seeding, figures to be a key figure in Sunday's track slate.
