BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Senior outfielder Alex Krupa hit a walk-off RBI single as Indiana baseball (33-21-2) earned a 5-4, 13-inning victory in an elimination game over No. 16 Michigan on Thursday afternoon. The win gave head coach Chris Lemonis the 100th of his career as IU's skipper.
Indiana had 10 hits on the day, led by multi-hit efforts from senior Craig Dedelow and freshman Matt Gorski. Dedlow homered in the contest, while Krupa, sophomore Matt Lloyd, and junior Logan Sowers each drove in runs.
Sophomore Pauly Milto started on the mound for Indiana, surrendering two runs over five innings of work. Junior B.J. Sabol tossed two hitless and scoreless frames of relief. Freshman Cal Krueger finished the game and got the win, as he allowed just two hits over three innings with four strikeouts and a walk.
Michigan got off to a fast start, stringing together two runs on three hits in the top of the second inning. A single and a stolen base by Jake Bivens set up an RBI single for Jonathan Engelmann. An RBI double for Johnny Slater rounded out the two-run second.
Dedelow's two-run blast came in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff four-pitch walk to sophomore Luke Miller was followed by the home run down the right field line.
The Wolverines rebounded in the top of the eighth. Drew Lugbauer hit a leadoff single off freshman Cameron Beauchamp and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Bivens plated the run to make it 3-2 in favor of Michigan.
The Hoosiers bounced back in the bottom half. Freshman Jeremy Houston led off with a double to the left centerfield gap. After senior Tony Butler bunted him to third, Lloyd tallied an RBI groundout to even the contest up at three. From there, Miller, Dedelow and Sowers each strung together three consecutive singles, as Sowers' resulted in the go-ahead run.
With Indiana leading heading to the top of the ninth, Michigan fought back to tie it up. Lugbauer delivered the game-tying RBI single to knot the game up at four.
The 13th was set up when Miller led off and reached on a throwing error by Lugbauer. After Dedelow worked a walk to give the Hoosiers two baserunners, back-to-back strikeouts sent Krupa to the plate with two outs. He singled down the left field line to score Miller from second to end the game.
The 4:28 game time set a Big Ten Tournament record for the longest game. The previous mark was 4:06 in 2007 by Ohio State and Minnesota.
Indiana will play the loser on Minnesota and Northwestern on Friday. First pitch is currently scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET.
