Indiana’s 2V8, 1V4 win semifinals heats
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – On the second day of competition at the 2017 NCAA Rowing Championships, three Indiana crews learned their fate for Sunday's finals heats. At the top, the 1V8 boat will race in the Petite Final after a sixth-place finish in their NCAA semifinals heat, while the Hoosiers' 2V8 crew dug deep for a C/D semifinals heat win. The 1V4 boat ended the day in dramatic fashion, clawing back from third-place to win their heat in the final 1000m.
The 1V8 Hoosiers began the day with a solid race despite rowing on the outside lane of a highly competitive semifinal heat. They finished the heat in sixth-place, crossing at a time of 6:32.410 with a best split of 1:34.230 in the first 500 meters. The 1V8 boat will enter Sunday's Petite Final race for the third time in the last four seasons.
In the very next race, Indiana's 2V8 crew assembled another inspiring performance with a victory in the first C/D semifinals heat. Indiana crossed the finish marker at 6:39.289, five seconds ahead of second-place Central Florida. They gained open water at the 1500m checkpoint, and they only dropped one second off of their split times at each 500m increment. That crew will enter Sunday's C semifinals, a race for 13th-place.
The Hoosiers' semifinals action ramped up in their final race, the 1V4's semifinal heat for a spot in the C Final. A top three finish ensured a lane in the race, but the Hoosiers didn't settle after the top three split from the pack. By the midpoint, the IU crew was decisively in third-place but they kept pushing for position, entering a second-place battle with Northeastern. They eventually gained water and passed the Northeastern crew, and continued to pursue Notre Dame's pace-setting boat.
In the final 750m of the course, Indiana charged ahead from third to first-place, crossing the finish line 0.67 seconds before the Irish bow ball. With that, they'll clinch a favorable lane assignment in their C Final race, with a chance for 13th-place.
