Seven Hoosiers to Compete in USATF Championships

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Two weeks after the conclusion of the 2016-17 collegiate track and field season, seven Hoosiers will be back on the track. Four athletes will compete in the USATF Outdoor Championships and three will compete in the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships. Both USATF events will be held in Sacramento, Calif. on the campus of Sacramento State University.
Day two of the USATF Outdoor Nationals will include sophomore Eric Bethea. He will contend in the triple jump competition slated to begin at 9:00 p.m. EST on Friday evening. Bethea earned an Indoor Big Ten Championship in the event earlier this season. He followed that performance up with Second-Team All-America honors in the NCAA Indoor Championships and honorable mention All-America honors during the outdoor campaign.
All-American Katherine Receveur will also compete on day two of the USATF Championships. Receveur, a three-time First-Team All-American, will run in the finals of the women's 5,000m run. Her sophomore season started with All-America honors in cross country after an 11th place finish in the national meet. She would go on to win the Indoor Big Ten Championship in the 5k and earn silver in the 3k. Two weeks later she finished sixth at the NCAA Indoor meet in the 5k, once again garnering All-America distinctions. Finally, she closed out the year with a third place finish in the 5k at the Outdoor NCAA Championships, snagging another All-America accolade. She will run at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Friday evening.
The final day from the Outdoor Nationals will include Sydney Clute. The senior recently closed out her IU career as the most decorated vaulter in program history. Clute holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault and the Big Ten conference record in the event. The Center Grove graduate was a three-time Big Ten champion, a Second-Team All-American in the 2016 Indoor track and field season and a three-time First-Team All-American in her outdoor career. She will be jumping at 3:00 p.m. EST on Sunday.
Willie Morrison will compete in the shot put on the final day. Morrison has accrued three Second-Team All-America honors in his career at Indiana. The sophomore finished 10th at the Indoor NCAA Meet and ninth at the Outdoor Meet earlier this season. The sophomore holds the school record in both the indoor and outdoor shot put. The Leavenworth, Kansas native will throw at 2:55 p.m. EST on Sunday.
In the USATF Junior Outdoor Nationals a trio of Hoosier women will compete. Khayla Dawson will kick-off the week for IU competitors. She will throw in the women's shot put at 6:20 p.m. EST on Friday afternoon. The freshman currently ranks fifth in school history in the event.
Grace Walther will also compete at 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening. Walther, a freshman, will run the 1,500m. She competed unattached since the cross country season earlier this year. During her freshman season she finished inside the top 10 three times, including a win at Intercollegiate Open running unattached.
Jenna Jungels is the final athlete to compete for IU this week. She will jump in the long jump final, slated to begin at 2:45 p.m. EST on Friday. Jungels earned a top 15 finish at the Big Ten Championships in both the 110m hurdles and the long jump.
