BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer fell to the University of Louisville on Thursday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium, 2-0. The Hoosiers (1-2) were outshot by the Cardinals (3-0), 18-10, with Louisville holding an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
"We've got a lot of work to do," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We didn't look like the same team as last weekend and something we pride ourselves on is building from game to game. We need to make sure we are training as hard as we can. I thought these last couple days were a bit sloppy in training and we saw a little bit of that sloppiness tonight."
The Cardinals struck first in the 18th minute as Emina Ekic cut down the middle of the field before moving to her right just inside the 18-yard box. Ekic's shot got past a diving Bethany Kopel and landed inside the far post.
IU sophomore Sydney Kilgore looked to respond a few minutes later as she had two different breakaway opportunities result in shots, but both were off target.
Indiana's first shot on goal of the game came in the 29th minute as junior Caroline Dreher headed the ball on frame after the Hoosiers earned a free kick 25 yards out. However, it was picked up by Louisville goalkeeper Gabrielle Kouzelos.
The Cardinals doubled their advantage in the 61st minute off the foot of Kennadi Carbin. The play developed near midfield as Alison Price sent the ball in to Carbin. Kopel got her hands on the pass, but it ricocheted off her gloves back to Carbin, who was able to push it to the back of the net.
Kopel did record six saves in the game, the most of her freshman career.
The Hoosiers' final close look of the night came on a header from senior Kayla Smith off a Hoosier corner in the 80th minute. Smith sent the ball backwards towards goal, but Kouzelos was again there to make the save.
Up next, Indiana is set to begin a seven-game road swing as the Hoosiers travel to Western Michigan (2-0) to face the Broncos Sunday at 2 p.m. The next home game for Indiana is Sept. 23 against Purdue.
"I'm not too worried," said Berbary. "I think we've got a good group of kids here that can wash tonight away and get themselves together for the rest of the weekend and the rest of the season."
