SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 4 Indiana University men's soccer team got the 2017 season off to a winning start, defeating Cal Poly, 2-0, in the first match of the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament on Friday in South Bend, Ind.
With the victory, the Hoosiers start the season 1-0, improving the team's unbeaten streak in season openers to seven (5-0-2).
"It was a good win over a good Cal Poly team," IU head coach Todd Yeagley remarked after the match. "I thought we had really good stretches, always felt in control of the game, however, we weren't as sharp in our passing and decision making. It looked like a first game, but it's really good to start off 1-0."
Junior Andrew Gutman and freshman Mason Toye scored goals for the Hoosiers, while freshman Thomas Warr, senior Grant Lillard and junior Austin Panchot all tallied assist in the victory. In goal, freshman Trey Muse recorded his first career shutout, making one save.
The Hoosiers jumped on the Mustangs early, as Gutman gave IU an early lead in the eighth minute. After a great buildup, freshman Griffin Dorsey sent a dangerous ball in to the 18-yard box. After the ball was knocked around, Warr settled it and dropped a pass off to his left for Gutman, who hammered it home from eight-yards out.
The goal was the third in the career for Gutman, while Warr notched his first career assist in his first collegiate match.
At halftime, Indiana remained in the lead, 1-0, over Cal Poly. In the first 45 minutes, Indiana out-shot the Mustangs, 4-3, and had a 4-1 advantage in corner kick.
In the 72nd minute, the Hoosiers put the match away with another great bit of team play. Off a free kick, Panchot sent the ball in to Lillard, who headed the ball off to Toye. The freshman found space and cracked shot from close range, beating the Cal Poly keeper easily.
The IU defense was stout in the first match of the year, posting the first shutout of the season. Last year, the Hoosier defense posted a Big Ten-best 11 shutouts on the year.
For the match, shots were 8-5 in favor of the Hoosiers, while IU also had a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Fouls were even at 11-11.
The No. 4 Hoosiers will conclude play in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament on Sunday, when the team faces San Diego at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.
