SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The No. 4 Indiana University men's soccer team defeated the San Diego Toreros, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday afternoon in the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind.
With the victory, Indiana improves to 2-0 on the season, while USD falls to 0-2. Indiana improves to 2-0 for the second-straight year, marking the first time since 2005-06 that the Hoosiers have accomplished that feat.
Freshman Griffin Dorsey made the most of his first collegiate goal, scoring the match-winner in the 100th minute. In goal, freshman Trey Muse made three saves in recording his second shutout of the weekend.
For their efforts in helping Indiana post a 2-0 record over the weekend, Andrew Gutman, Rece Buckmaster and Grant Lillard were all named to the Mike Berticelli All-Tournament Team. Gutman was also named co-Most Outstanding Defensive Player along with Felicien Dumas of Notre Dame, who won the tournament on aggregate goals, 4-3.
In a scoreless first half, the Hoosiers had the best of the opportunities, out-shooting San Diego, 9-3, in the first 45 minutes.
In the 23rd minutes, freshman Thomas Warr was unlucky not to score, as his close-range effort from the left side was saved. The rebound came back to Warr, who's effort then clanged off the near post.
Later in the first half, Dorsey made a great run down the right side, sending a cross to the near side, finding classmate Mason Toye, who's shot from six yards was saved on a dive by the USD goalkeeper.
In the second half, the Hoosiers continued to control possession, but were unable to get on the scoreboard. IU out-shot the Tereros, 5-2, in the frame as the match headed to overtime.
After withstanding an early offensive onslaught from San Diego, which included a pair of nice saves from Muse, the Hoosiers went on the attack.
With just 41 seconds left in overtime, Dorsey made a great move to find space along the right wing. The freshman cracked a shot from 25 yards out, beating the USD keeper and giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 victory.
For the match, Indiana out-shot San Diego, 15-9, getting five shots on-goal to four for USD. Corner kicks were 8-3 in favor of IU.
