BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 4-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team used a dominating offensive performance to defeat the San Francisco Dons, 5-1, on Friday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
Scoring goals for Indiana on the night were Trevor Swartz, Mason Toye, Timmy Mehl, Francesco Moore and Rashad Hyacenth, while Griffin Dorsey and Jack Griffith each notched assists in the victory. In goal, freshman Trey Muse made three saves for the Hoosiers.
Indiana scored five goals with five different scorers for the first time since they had six different players score in a 6-0 win against Butler on Oct. 19, 2005. IU has now started 3-0 in consecutive seasons for the fourth time in school history and for the first time since 1998.
Just 47 seconds in, Griffin Dorsey was at it again for the Hoosiers. The freshman made a great run in to the box, drawing a foul on San Francisco to earn the penalty kick. Swartz stepped up to the spot for IU and converted, giving Indiana the early, 1-0 lead. The goal was the sixth-fastest in program history.
In the 19th minute, the Hoosiers were back on the attack. After taking a pass from Jeremiah Gutjahr, Toye fed the ball out to the right to Dorsey, who gave it right back to his fellow freshman, who finished with a diving effort from seven-yards out to score. Toye's goal was his second of the season, while Dorsey notched his first collegiate assist.
Less than two minutes, later the Hoosiers allowed their first goal of the season, as USF's Sean Bowman headed it home off a free kick to cut the IU lead to 2-1.
Leading 2-1 at the halftime break, IU thoroughly controlled the first 45 minutes. Indiana out-shot San Francisco, 11-4, and also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
With San Francisco pushing for the equalizer, the Hoosiers sealed the victory in the 71st minute on a free kick. After Rashad Hyacenth was pulled down, IU was given a free kick from 25 yards out, dead center. Mehl stepped up and struck a beauty, netting his first career goal to push IU's lead to 3-1.
In the 79th minute, it was Moore's turn to score his first career goal. Hyacenth was again a thorn in the side of the Dons, as the senior was fouled in the box to earn a penalty kick. Moore calmly took his shot from the spot to give Indiana a 4-1 advantage.
Under four minutes later, Hyacenth got on the board himself with an outstanding shot from distance. After taking a pass from Griffith, the senior uncorked a rocket from the top-right corner of the box, giving the USF keeper no chance to save it. Hyacenth's first goal of the season gave IU the team's winning margin of 5-1.
For the match, the Hoosiers out-shot San Francisco, 17-8, getting nine shots on-goal to just four for the Dons. IU also had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers will face the South Florida Bulls on Sunday, Sept. 3 in the final match of the 2017 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. ET.
