WASHINGTON – The Indiana volleyball team captured the George Washington Invitational title with a 3-1 (25-14, 25-16, 24-26, 25-20) win over LIU-Brooklyn on Saturday at the Smith Center.
The Hoosiers improved to 6-0 on the season after starting the 2017 season by winning the Indiana Invitational.
Sophomore Meaghan Koors was named the MVP of the George Washington Invitational and sophomore Hayden Huybers and freshman Bayli Lebo earned spots on the All-Tournament Team.
Koors, who tied an Indiana program record for digs in a three-set match on Friday with 25 in the win over George Washington, registered 50 digs for the tournament (4.55 per set).
"I'm really proud of where this team is right now," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "We said we would rather learn and win then learn and lose. We dropped two sets this weekend, which I think is pretty good for our first road trip."
Huybers hit .432 for the tournament with 23 kills and added 10 blocks and Lebo tallied 20 kills, three aces, two kills and two assists.
Junior Elizabeth Asdell led the Hoosiers against LIU-Brooklyn with 13 kills and redshirt sophomore Kendall Beerman added 10. The Hoosiers posted 67 digs in the match with three players in double-digits (Samantha Fogg-13, Victoria Brisack-11 and Meaghan Koors-10).
Sophomore Deyshia Lofton recorded nine kills and had six of her team-high seven blocks through two sets. Freshman Bayli Lebo gave the Hoosiers early momentum with two of her three aces in the first set.
In a similar way to the morning match against Hofstra, the Hoosiers came out strong and rolled to a 2-0 lead in the match against the Blackbirds.
In the third set, there were 13 ties and eight lead changes and the Hoosiers couldn't close out the match as LIU-Brooklyn won the set 26-24 to force a fourth set.
With the Hoosiers down 6-5 in the fourth set, enter freshman Kamryn Malloy. Malloy scored the next six points for Indiana with six of her seven kills in the set and helped the Hoosiers to an 11-7 lead.
Fellow freshman Alexis Parker added four kills as the Hoosiers hit .432 in the fourth set with 20 kills.
Malloy's final kill came on set and match point from setter Victoria Brisack to give the Hoosiers the victory.
Up next the Hoosiers travel to Evansville, Ind., for the Dunn Hospitality Tournament hosted by Evansville. Indiana will take on Evansville, UT-Martin and UAB in the tournament.
