Bloomington, Ind. – Redshirt sophomore Kendall Beerman led the Indiana volleyball team with 12 kills, but they fell in three sets (23-25, 17-25, 15-25) against Illinois on Wednesday at University Gym.
Freshman Kamryn Malloy tallied her second straight productive match for the Hoosiers. After a nine kill on 12 attempt performance in the win over Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Malloy came back with 11 kills and hit .333 against the Fighting Illini.
For Beerman, who added seven digs it was her eighth-straight match with double-digit kills.
"We will look at some things we didn't do as well in the second and third set as we did in the first set," IU head coach Sherry Dunbar-Kruzan said. "It's a mentality thing and we need to be a little more locked into where our jobs are on the court. We will learn from this and get ready for Saturday."
The Hoosiers (11-2, 0-1) and the Fighting Illini (10-2, 1-0) matched each other point for point in the first set, a set that included 14 ties and seven lead changes.
The statistics were nearly equal in the opening set, but with the score tied 23-23 the Hoosiers made a service error, followed by a ball handling error which ended in Illinois winning the set 25-23.
The Hoosiers out-hit Illinois in the opening set, .256 to .244 and held slim advantages in assists (14-13) and digs (17-16).
In the second set Illinois converted 17 kills and three errors, while Indiana made six attack errors and 11 kills. The Fighting Illini won set two, 25-17. Beerman hit .750 with three kills on four swings in the set, while Malloy hit .300 with six kills.
In the third set it was a similar scenario as Illinois recorded 16 kills and two errors and Indiana tallied 13 kills, but seven attack errors.
After a kill by junior Elizabeth Asdell cut the Illinois lead to 8-6, The Fighting Illini scored six of the next eight points to build a 14-8 lead. Illinois would go on to win the match with a win in set three, 25-15.
