BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer played Purdue to a 1-1 draw in Saturday's Golden Boot Game at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Junior Maya Piper netted the score for Indiana in the 25th minute.
The draw moved the Hoosiers to 5-4-2 on the season with a 1-1-1 Big Ten mark. Purdue now sits at 7-2-1 and 2-0-1 in conference action.
"Anytime you can come out with any amount of points is important in this conference because of the nature of this league. This conference is so good this year, anybody can beat anybody on any given day and I thought we stayed composed, even through overtime. We gave ourselves a couple chances to put away the game. But, I was happy we were able to hold and come out with a draw."
Indiana outshot Purdue, 13-11, but both teams put just two shots on frame.
The Hoosiers controlled possession early on, but had only one shot to show for it through the first 23 minutes. However, IU would strike on its second corner kick as sophomore Meghan Scott sent the ball in to the head of redshirt junior Mykayla Brown. Brown's header clanked off the crossbar but fell to freshman Hanna Németh, who teamed up with Piper to find the back of the net. The goal was the fifth of the season for Piper, who now shares the team lead with sophomore Chandra Davidson.
Purdue, who leads the Big Ten in goals this season, didn't put a shot up until the 22nd minute as a look from Maddy Williams was blocked. The best look for the Boilermakers in the opening frame came off the foot of Alyssa Lum, but freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel was there to make the stop.
"We talked all week about how relentless they were in the attack with their two main dynamic players," said Berbary. "I thought this was the best defense performance from front to back that we have put together in a game all year."
Brown nearly extended the lead in the 56th minute as she drew Purdue goalkeeper Katie Luce off her line, but sent her shot off the far post.
The Boilermakers tied the game in the 64th minute of a goal from Sarah Griffith, who picked up a cross from Williams and drove it in.
Indiana's best chance to take back the lead came just five minutes later as senior Kayla Smith fired in a shot on a corner kick re-service, however it stayed left of goal.
The first overtime period featured a pair of shots from Purdue's Andrea Petrina, however both were off target. Indiana had the lone shot of the second overtime, as a look from Davidson on a corner kick went high.
Indiana returns to action on Thursday as the Hoosiers play host to Northwestern (4-4-2, 1-1-1 Big Ten). The game will kick at 8 p.m. and be broadcast live on Big Ten Network. Admission to all Indiana home games is free of charge.
"We pushed ourselves to the limit tonight and I love the fight we saw from this team," said Berbary. "They need to take care of themselves over the next couple days and we'll go back to work. We have to fine tune our decisions in the final third if we want to continue to succeed in this league. That's something that we'll really concentrate on the rest of the week."
