NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana Women's Soccer dropped a 2-0 battle to Memphis in Sunday afternoon's Music City Invitational. Both goals from the Tigers came in the first half of play.
"I thought we came out pretty flat and you could tell it was a Sunday game, which is no excuse," said head coach Amy Berbary. "We have to learn how to grind out after a hard-fought game Friday night and we have to figure out how to start stronger."
The Tigers, who received votes in the United Soccer Coaches Poll last week, jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. Stasia Mallin went wide and served the ball in from the right to Jessica Lisi, whose shot was deflected off a Hoosier defender into the back of the net.
Memphis (5-0) outshot Indiana (3-3) in the first half, 11-4, with the first Hoosier attempt coming in the 22nd minute of action as Piper sent a great ball down the right flank to Brown, who collected it and fired before it was saved by Memphis goalkeeper Rachel Ashworth Shepard.
Indiana's best chance in the opening half came in the 36th minute as a shot by Chandra Davidson was saved by Ashworth Shepard, but bounced backwards off her gloves. However, it stayed just left of the goal.
The Tigers extended their lead to 2-0 in the 33rd minute as Marie Levasseur found Elizabeth Woerner on a cross that traveled through the box. Woerner sent it inside the left post for the goal.
Out of the break, the Hoosiers did look more dangerous offensively as they outshot Memphis in the second half, 8-4, with six of those coming in the final 23 minutes of action.
"It was a tale of two halves. We were very good in that second half and it wasn't that we sorted out too much at halftime tactically, it was a matter of giving a little bit more effort and getting inside," said Berbary. "Unfortunately, we didn't finish the chances that we created today."
A quality run by junior Abby Allen down the left flank in the 67th minute resulted in an on-target shot from freshman Melanie Forbes that was saved. Allen nearly connected again 10 minutes later as she served the ball across the box, finding the head of sophomore Sydney Kilgore. However, the ball ricocheted off the crossbar.
Two more Hoosier shots were caught by the front of the goal in the final minutes as looks from redshirt juniors Annelie Leitner and Mykayla Brown both hit off the post.
Freshman goalkeeper Bethany Kopel collected six saves in the loss, three in each half of action.
Indiana finished second in the Music City Invitational behind Memphis and placed four on the All-Tournament team – Chandra Davidson, Caroline Dreher, Bethany Kopel and Meghan Scott.
"What we take from this game is that we are creating chances, but we have to make plays," said Berbary. "That was our message today in pregame that we can't rely on one person to make plays for us. We have to have a few more people that are going to get the job done. At the end of the day, that's what's going to propel us to be prepared for conference."
The Hoosiers continue their seven-game road trip next weekend as they head to Texas. Indiana will face No. 22 Southern Methodist (3-0-2) on Friday in Dallas before traveling to North Texas (3-2) Sunday afternoon.
