BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 1-ranked Indiana University men's soccer team took down Santa Clara in impressive fashion on Saturday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium, winning 5-0 en route to posting the team's fourth-straight shutout win.
With the victory, Indiana improves to 8-0-2 on the season overall, while Santa Clara falls to 0-9 on the year. IU is unbeaten in the team's first 10 matches for the second-straight year and for the ninth time in school history.
Freshman Griffin Dorsey had a goal and two assists to lead the way for IU, while junior Rece Buckmaster finished with three assists in the match, just one off the school single-match record. Junior Austin Panchot had a pair of assists for Indiana.
Senior captain Grant Lillard scored the game-winner for IU, while junior Andrew Gutman, redshirt junior Cory Thomas and freshman Mason Toye all scored their fourth goals of the season, respectively.
In goal, freshman keeper Trey Muse made two saves in posting his eighth shutout of the season. The eight blank sheets for Indiana through the team's first 10 matches are the most in school history since 1979.
After a scoreless first 30 minutes, the Hoosiers barraged the Broncos with goals, scoring four times in the span of 9:33 minutes.
Lillard got the team on the board first in the 32nd minute, netting a score from just six yards out. Just under four minutes later, Toye registered the second goal of the match for IU on a great bit of buildup, scoring from eight yards out.
Five minutes later, it was Gutman's turn. The junior used a great pass from Panchot to carve through the Santa Clara defense, converting his effort from six yards out. Just 25 seconds later, Thomas made it 4-0 when he curled in a low shot from the top-right corner of the box, continuing his strong run of play.
The offense continued in the second half in the 65th minute. Headed down the right flank, Buckmaster found Thomas at the top of the box, who back-heeled a perfect pass to Dorsey. The freshman didn't waste the effort, striking a laser to the far post to give the Hoosiers the winning margin of 5-0.
For the match, Indiana out-shot the Broncos, 25-8, getting 13 shots on goal to just two for Santa Clara. Corner kicks were 11-1 in favor of the Hoosiers.
With the offensive onslaught, IU has now scored 25 goals in the team's first 10 matches, the most since the 2005 squad scored 26 in the team's first 10 games. The two goals allowed defensively are the fewest in the stretch since 1979.
The No. 1 Indiana Hoosiers will host in-state rival Evansville on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Kickoff in Bloomington is set for 7:30 p.m. ET and the match will be streamed live on BTN Plus.
