Fellow senior Jennifer Beadle matched a career high with four goals to lead IU past No. 25 Fresno State in their season opener. The Hoosier defense held their opponents to 4-of-28 in power play scenarios.
10-4 Tandem is Back
Indiana's dynamic All-American duo, senior Kelly Matthews and sophomore Mollie Williams, returned to the pool with gusto last weekend. Matthews created 12 goals (5g, 7a) over three games, including her 36th career hat trick against Fresno State and three assists in two ranked games.
Williams scored three goals, forced two steals, and drew five ejections, including a career-high three power-play creations against Arizona State. The Sutherland Shire, Australia native has scored or found an assist in 29-of-34 career appearances.
Back Home Again
The Hoosiers are ecstatic for a chance to defend the CBAC this early in the season with the first of nine hometown games in 2018. Indiana's two varsity games will continue a season aperture with five consecutive ranked opponents.
Indiana posted a 1-0 home record with only one regular season varsity contest in Bloomington last season, but earned two more wins while hosting the CWPA Championship. Over the last four seasons, the Hoosiers are 15-3 in their home pool.
Tango with the Gauchos
Indiana's banner matchup of the weekend will be on Saturday night against No. 14 UC Santa Barbara. Both teams saw each other in action at the Gauchos' pool last weekend but waited to face one another until they could battle in Bloomington.
The Hoosiers and Gauchos have split their last four meetings, with each winning a game in overtime. The Gauchos won last year's encounter, 8-4, at UCSB.
Neighbors to the North
Indiana begins the weekend with an intriguing exhibition contest against Toronto University. Four Hoosiers came to Bloomington from Canada, and Sarah Myers hails from Toronto.
With the Varsity Blues comes their head coach, Canadian water polo legend George Gross Jr. Competing in two Olympic Games for Canada's national team and 170 games over his career, Gross Jr. holds the record for the longest goal scored in Olympic History.
Of Note...
• Senior Jennifer Beadle (104 career goals) is the latest Hoosier to cross the century mark on her career goal tally. Beadle joins Kelly Matthews (210) as the only active Hoosiers with over 100 scores.
• UCSB junior Kate Pipkin returns to Bloomington for the first time since wearing the IU cap as a freshman during the 2016 season. Pipkin recorded 54 assists (lead team), 28 goals, and 42 steals in her season at Indiana, earning All-CWPA Championship second team honors.
