BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's wrestling team suffered a 43-0 defeat to No. 8 Michigan on Friday evening at University Gymnasium. The Hoosiers (6-4, 0-3) saw three bouts go down to the wire but ultimately fell short of putting points on the team scoreboard. The Wolverines (3-1, 1-0), Indiana's third top-10 dual opponent in the last 30 days, won six matches with bonus points.
Junior Cole Weaver (141) received his first loss since a runner-up finish at last weekend's Midlands Championships, a 6-4 decision to No. 24 Sal Profaci in the second bout of the evening. Trailing 5-0 at the end of the second period, Weaver scored a late reversal to turn the tide as they approached the final two minutes. Weaver grabbed an escape and a favorable stall point in the third to pull within one, but couldn't swing around for a takedown before time expired.
Freshman Austin Holmes (165) and sophomore Brandon James (157) made their U-Gym debuts against the Wolverines. Holmes amassed a valiant fight in his bout, striking first with a takedown to gain a 3-2 lead in the first period. He conceded the lead to Reece Hughes in the second but pulled within a point midway through the third. The comeback attempt stopped there, as Hughes scored two more takedowns to seal the decision, 10-4.
The most hotly contested match of the evening came at 174 lbs. between Hoosier sophomore Devin Skatzka and No. 5 Myles Amine. The standout Wolverine was first on the board but Skatzka countered on a reversal to trail 3-2 after three minutes. Amine scored an escape in the second and went to work on a ride in the third period. Skatzka nearly flipped into a reversal on the mat's edge, which would've forced sudden victory, but Amine fended off the attempt in a scramble to only give up an escape point.
