BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Former Indiana offensive lineman and IU Athletics Hall of Famer Bob Skoronski died on Monday in Fitchburg, Wis. He was 84 years old.
Skoronski played for the Hoosiers from 1953-55, served as team captain in 1954 and was named Indiana's Most Valuable Player in 1955. He earned induction into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in the inaugural class of 1982, where he was the keynote speaker at the ceremony.
A fifth-round pick of the Green Bay Packers in 1956, Skoronski played 11 seasons with the team. He spent two years in the military after his rookie season before he returned to Green Bay.
The Packers won five NFL championships over the next nine years, including the first two Super Bowls. Skoronski primarily lined up at left tackle and was the team's offensive captain.
From 1961 to 1964, Green Bay posted the top four single-season rushing marks in its storied history. The record of 2,460 yards came in 1962 en route to a 13-1 record. The Packers led the league in rushing in 1961, '62 and '64.
Skoronski was elected to the Pro Bowl following the 1966 season. He was inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame in 1976, the fifth Green Bay tackle so honored.
Bob is survived by his wife, the former Ruth Ann Ahser, whom he met at IU.
