BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana University men's soccer's Andrew Gutman and Trey Muse were both named one of 15 semifinalists for the 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy, United Soccer Coaches announced on Tuesday. The semifinalists were determined based on voting by NCAA DI soccer coaches.
Indiana is one of two schools (Wake Forest) with two semifinalists for the most sought-after individual award in NCAA soccer. The two semifinalists are the most for IU since the team had three (Jacob Peterson, Brian Plotkin, Jed Zayner) in 2005. In the storied history of Indiana men's soccer, an IU player has been named the national player of the year 11 times. Last season, Grant Lillard finished as a runner-up for the award.
Muse was the only goalkeeper to make the 15-player list, while Gutman was one of just four defenders to be named a semifinalist.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year. For more information about the MAC Hermann Trophy, including a list of past winners, visit MACHermannTrophy.org.
A unanimous selection as the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and member of the All-Big Ten First Team, Gutman has played a pivotal role in Indiana's success both offensively and defensively. The senior left back leads the team with 11 goals on the season to go with eight assists. Defensively, Gutman has helped the Hoosiers post 14 shutouts on the season – the second-most in the country – and a goals-against average of 0.487 that ranks fourth in the nation.
"Andrew has been a key player for our program from the moment he arrived on campus" IU head coach Todd Yeagley said. "In my years of coaching, I have not seen a player influence the game in such a positive way on both ends of the field like Andrew has done this past season. We will be talking about Andrew's impact on our program for many years to come."
Gutman ranks third in the country and leads the Big Ten with six game-winning goals this season, while his point total of 30 ranks 12th-best in the NCAA. The Hinsdale, Ill. native also ranks 27th in the nation with his 11 goals on the year.
After posting one of the best goalkeeping seasons in NCAA history in 2017, Trey Muse has had another tremendous year in 2018. A unanimous selection as the Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year and All-Big Ten First-Team honoree, Muse has recorded 11 solo shutouts this season – best in the Big Ten and fifth in the country. The sophomore also shared three shutouts this year, helping IU post 14 clean sheets on the season – second-best in the NCAA.
"Trey is a special talent and he continues to anchor an excellent IU defensive unit," Yeagley remarked. "His presence, organizational skills and big play moments have helped Trey emerge as an elite keeper. He will go down as one of our all-time best goalkeepers to wear the IU jersey."
Muse leads the Big Ten and ranks fifth in the country with a goals-against average of 0.499, while his save percentage of 0.800 is 29th in the nation. For his career, Muse has helped record 32 shutouts in 47 matches played.
Three men's finalists and three women's finalists will be named on Dec. 7 in conjunction with the Men's College Cup semifinals in Santa Barbara, Calif. The 2018 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 4, 2019 to formally announce this year's winners.
The No. 1-ranked Indiana Hoosiers will host the No. 13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:00 p.m. ET in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
