BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Rowing recently wrapped up a successful fall season where it took part in two scrimmages and one prominent national regatta.
"When I look back on the fall, I am very happy with the work we have gotten done," IU head coach Steve Peterson said. "Despite being a relatively young team, this team is fitter and stronger than we have ever been. We have been doing a tremendous amount of mileage and volume in our training, and it is really paying off. Doing all of this work is building confidence for our athletes. To be seeing the speeds they are, this early in the year, has everyone excited. We have some very solid goals for this year that everyone on the team is focused on. You can see it in the way they are training and their attitude each day in practice."
This fall, the Hoosiers started off with a scrimmage against Iowa and Wisconsin on Sept. 28-29 up in Madison. They then raced in the Championship 8 and Championship 4 events at the prestigious Head of the Charles regatta and wrapped up the fall with a scrimmage against foes Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame in Columbus on Nov. 4.
"We have been trying a number of different lineups and combinations – all with an eye to seeing what works and what doesn't. These races and scrimmages have been invaluable because they have given both coaches and rowers alike feedback on how we are doing in real life race situations," Peterson said.
Peterson, who enters his 16th year with the Hoosiers, stresses the fall is about working on three aspects key to having successful boats in the spring – building their fitness and power, developing their technique/rowing style, and finally, finding their team identity. All three will lead Indiana into its 19th season of varsity competition, after finishing 13th overall at last year's 2018 NCAA Championships.
Most of the Hoosiers practices in the fall consisted of training in smaller boats to help build a solid base for when they move into the bigger boats in the spring. He noted the addition of the Head of the Charles regatta to the fall lineup, the first appearance for IU in over a decade, was invaluable experience to expose his young team to great competition early in the year. Over 11,000 athletes rowed in over 1,900 boats in 61 events at the Charles Regatta. It was estimated that over 300,000 spectators lined the banks of the Charles river in Boston to watch the races.
The spring season gets underway in March with spring break training starting in Bloomington and then moving to Oak Ridge, Tenn. from March 9-17. The training trip will culminate with their first official spring regatta of the 2019 season – the Cardinal Invite – which will have the Hoosiers facing off against 12 teams from around the country.
"I am extremely excited about the progress we have made to this point in the year and the key will be if the athletes can maintain their momentum as we go into winter break. If they can do that, I think the spring 2019 season will be a very special one for Indiana Rowing."
