NOTES: Hoosiers Tangle With Butler at 8th Annual Crossroads Classic

Indiana University is in its 119th season of competition in men's basketball. The Hoosiers will take on Butler in the eighth installment of the Crossroads Classic which features IU, Butler, Purdue and Notre Dame. IU is 4-3 in the event, defeating Notre Dame, 80-77, in overtime last year. The 25th-rated Hoosiers are ranked for the first time in nearly two seasons and are riding a three-game winning streak, including a 68-67 win over Louisville at home in their last contest. The Bulldogs are 7-2 and are coming off a 95-68 win over Northern Illinois on December 8.

THE COACHES
Indiana Coach Archie Miller is in his second season of guiding the Cream and Crimson. Last year, the Hoosiers finished 16-15 and 9-9 in the Big Ten. He is 163-80 in 7-plus years as a head coach, which includes 6 years at the University of Dayton. His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2014. Butler is guided by LaVall Jordan who also enters his second season of leading the Bulldogs. A former player at Butler, Jordan led them to an NCAA Tournament bid a season ago.

IU is rated 25th in the latest AP poll, 20th in the NET, and 25th by KenPom. The Hoosiers have the 21st-rated defense in the country according to KenPom.
The Hoosiers have four Top 50 wins according to KenPom--Marquette (35), Louisville (40), Penn State (42) and Northwestern (47). Their only losses came on the road at Duke (1) and Arkansas (50).
IU is one of just eight major conference teams to have already played 3 true road games. The others include, Colorado, Michigan State, North Carolina, Purdue, Rutgers, Stanford and Wisconsin.
Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the 10-member Preseason All-Big Ten team. Both are among 50 players listed as candidates for the 2019 Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award and Langford is among 20 players on the NABC Player of the Year watch list. Langford was named third-team Preseason All-American by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com and earned fourth-team honors from WatchStadium.com. Langford has twice already been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Morgan also is up for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
Morgan needs 15 points to become the 52nd player in IU history to score 1,000 points or more in his career. Langford's 20 point effort in his first Big Ten game is the most by a true freshman in their first conference outing since Eric Gordon had 25 in his first B1G contest at Iowa in 2008. He is the only Hoosier to score in double digits every game.
Coach Archie Miller's squad is the top shooting team in the Big Ten, and 6th in the country, making 51.4% of its shots.
CROSSROADS COMEBACK
Juwan Morgan scored a career-high 34 points in leading IU to the comeback win against Notre Dame in the 7th edition of the Crossroads Classic. It also was the most points scored in a Crossroads Classic game.
IU trailed by as many as 14 (5:05 left in the second half). The Irish led 65-57 with 2:01 to go before Morgan scored the next 8 points to force OT. Notre Dame missed two free throws with a second left.
With the Hoosiers trailing 77-74 with 20 seconds left, Morgan made a layup and was fouled with 8 seconds left on the clock. His missed free throw as grabbed by Zach McRoberts who hit a cutting Morgan who dunked to give IU the lead. Following a missed three-pointer by Notre Dame, Devonte Green would hit two free throws in the final seconds to give IU the 80-77 win.
THE COMEBACK TRAIL
IU trailed Northwestern, 61-58, with 3:30 left in the game when senior Juwan Morgan went out due to a leg injury. He did not return and IU outscored the Wildcats, 10-5. They held Northwestern to 2 of 9 shooting, while making 3 of 4 shots and 4 of 6 FT. Romeo Langford hit the go-ahead floater with 39.7 seconds left and also deflected the ball off a Wildcat on the ensuing defensive possession.
Against Penn State, the Nittany Lions led 9-0, but the Hoosiers came back and led by as many as 14 in the second half. PSU rallied and had a chance to tie or win the game with 2.3 seconds left, but freshman Rob Phinisee knocked away the inbound pass and sophomore Justin Smith fell on it as time ran out.
IU trailed Louisville by 7 with 17:10 to go. In the final 3:50 against U of L, IU held the Cardinals to 2 of 7 shooting from the field, while it made all 3 of its field goal attempts and 7 of 12 from the free throw line
After the Cardinals took a 58-57 lead with 1:37 to go in the game, IU scored eight straight points to go up 65-58. Freshman Rob Phinisee's 3FG with 1:25 to play gave IU the lead for good.
