BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After leading IU to a 71-68 win over Butler in the Crossroads Classic, senior Juwan Morgan has been named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association of America (USBWA). He received similar honors a season ago after guiding IU to a win over Notre Dame in the same event.
Morgan scored a career-high 35 points, breaking his previous career-high and tournament record from last year (34 points) in leading IU to a 71-68 comeback win over Butler in the Crossroads Classic. Morgan also became the 52nd player in IU history to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in his career and ranks 51st on the IU list with 1,020 points.
IU trailed by 11 in the first half and by nine midway through the second half. He made 12-of-14 field goal attempts, four of six from long distance and all seven of his FTs. In addition, he had two steals and two blocks. His steal with 3:50 led to him making two game-tying free throws and on the next possession, he gave IU its first lead of the game.
Morgan is seventh in the league in scoring (17.3), second in three-point field goal percentage (48.1%), fifth in field goal percentage (67.2%) and 10th in rebounds (7.6). He finishes his three-game career at the Crossroads Classic second in total points scored (75) and points per game (25.0) among those who have competed in the eight-year event.
Morgan, a native of Waynesville, Mo., is a candidate for the Naismith Award, Wooden Award and Senior CLASS Award.
