
Late Comeback Not Enough As Indiana Drops Contest To Grambling State

GUAYNABO, Puerto Rico – A second-half comeback attempt was thwarted as Indiana fell for the first time in the 2018-19 season to Grambling State on day two of the Puerto Rico Classic.

KEY MOMENTS
- Much like day one of the Puerto Rico Classic, the score would be knotted up at 14-all at the end of the first quarter,
- In the early goings of second, Indiana (10-1) would take a lead but Grambling's 16-2 run would be too much for the Hoosiers, who found themselves trailing 33-23 at the half.
- Looking to erase the deficit, the Hoosiers fell behind by as many as 17 early in the third quarter. They would cut down on the lead and get within as few as six (50-44) in the final minutes of the quarter as Wise hit a pair at the line. But the Tigers (2-8) had the answer with 22 seconds left, giving their team a 52-44 lead going into the fourth quarter.
- Indiana would win both the third and fourth quarters including an 18-13 advantage in the fourth as it staged a comeback. As part of a 16-1 run as Patberg's left wing 3-pointer and Yeaney's step up jumper gave the lead to IU, 62-61, with 1:32 to play.
- However, the Tigers would respond on the other end with a 3-pointer as the Hoosiers came up empty in that final 1:32 of play to drop its first game of the season.
NOTABLE
- Redshirt junior guard Ali Patberg turned in her third 20-plus performance of the season with a game high 21 points. The Columbus, Ind. native also added five rebounds and three assists and improved to hitting 19 of her last 20 free throws with a 7-for-8 effort at the line.
- Sophomore guard Bendu Yeaney recorded her fifth-straight game in double figures as she added 14 points.
- The Hoosiers dished out 10 assists on 20 made shots, led by three each from Patberg and freshman guard Grace Berger.
- Redshirt junior forward Brenna Wise led IU on the boards with seven. IU narrowly outrebounded the Tigers, 38-34. Senior forward Kym Royster also added six rebounds and give points.
- Indiana committed 20 turnovers, as Grambling picked up 11 steals in the effort.
- Grambling State takes the first ever meeting in the series.
- The loss ends the Hoosiers notable win streaks, winning their first 10 games of the 2018-19 season and ends the nation's longest active win streak of 16 games.
