
Hoosiers Win Big Ten Opener In Overtime At Illinois

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Indiana Women's Basketball held on for an 85-83 overtime win in the Big Ten opener at Illinois on Friday night.

KEY MOMENTS
- Indiana opened up the game with a 26-20 lead after the first quarter as it shot 64.3 percent from the floor. In the second, on back-to-back 3 pointers by Penn Indiana built its largest lead at 15 with 6:06 to play.
- It paved the way for a 47-38 lead for Indiana at the break, but the third quarter was anything but kind. The Hoosiers would be outscored, 30-18, in the frame and trailed 68-61 heading in to the fourth quarter.
- Chipping its way back and facing its largest deficit of nine with 8;20 remaining, Indiana got a boost from a triple from sophomore guard Jaelynn Penn along with three straight turnovers and a 4-for-4 performance at the line from Gulbe, who crashed the offensive glass and got to the line in the bonus. In the waning minutes, both teams had chances to break the 77-all tie, but all attempts were thwarted as the game went to five extra minutes of play.
- In overtime, Indiana drew first blood on a steal from Yeaney led to a layup in transition. The Fighting Illini regained a brief one-point lead on a Brandi Beasley free throw. But Yeaney would regain things back for good as she made her way to the line, where she finished the night 4-for-6.
- With 1:22 remaining in overtime, senior forward Kym Royster came up big with a conventional 3-point play on an offensive rebound and putback to go up 84-80. On the following possession, the Illini answered on a jumper from senior forward Alex Wittinger.
- With 36.7 remaining, Indiana would hold the ball on its final seconds of its shot clock but a missed IU shot led to a Yeaney offensive rebounds which drew a foul and sent her to the line. She converted on both with four seconds left in the game.
- On Illinois' final possession, they drew a foul with .04 remaining as it made the first and went for the miss and rebound on the second but the shot was airballed and turned over to the Hoosiers who held on for the win.
NOTABLE
- Redshirt junior guard Ali Patberg led the way with 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists. It marked her ninth-consecutive game in double figures.
- Penn scored her sixth game in double figures with 19 points and tied a career-high five 3-pointers going 5-for-9 from the 3-point line.
- Redshirt junior forward Brenna Wise and sophomore guard Bendu Yeaney also finished the game in double figures, each adding 12 points. Yeaney also led the way with three steals
- Indiana improved to 16-21 in Big Ten season openers and have won its last two overtime games (last vs. Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament).
- The Hoosiers played in their first overtime game of the season on Friday night.
- On the glass, IU won the advantage, 43-39. Patberg led the way with seven boards while Wise and Yeaney each added six.
