THE COACHES
Indiana Coach Archie Miller is in his second season of guiding the Cream and Crimson. Last year, the Hoosiers finished 16-15 and 9-9 in the Big Ten. He is 162-80 in 7-plus years as a head coach, which includes 6 years at the University of Dayton. His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2014. Louisville is guided by Chris Mack who enters his first season with the Cardinals. He spent 9 years as the head coach at Xavier and was the top assistant for the Musketeers under Miller's brother, Sean, prior to taking over as head coach.
NEWS & NOTES
The wins over Northwestern and Penn State marked the first time since Feb 12 and Feb. 19, 1994, that IU has won back-to back 2-point decisions in league play. The Hoosiers beat Iowa, 93-91 and Purdue, 82-80 in those games.
IU trailed Northwestern, 61-58 with 3:30 left in the game when senior Juwan Morgan went out due to a leg injury. He did not return and IU outscored the Wildcats, 10-5. They held Northwestern to 2 of 9 shooting, while making 3 of 4 shots and 4 of 6 FT. Romeo Langford hit the go-ahead floater with 39.7 seconds left and also deflected the ball off a Wildcat in the ensuing defensive possession.
Against Penn State, the Nittany Lions led 9-0, but the Hoosiers came back and led by as many as 14 in the second half. PSU rallied and had a chance to tie or win the game with 2.3 seconds left, but freshman Rob Phinisee knocked away the inbound pass and sophomore Justin Smith fell on it as time ran out.
Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the 10-member Preseason All-Big Ten team. Both are among 50 players listed as candidates for the 2019 Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award and Langford is among 20 players on the NABC Player of the Year watch list. Langford was named third-team Preseason All-American by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com and earned fourth-team honors from WatchStadium.com. Morgan also is up for the 2019 Senior CLASS Award.
Morgan needs 30 points to become the 52nd player in IU history to score 1,000 points or more in his career. Langford's 20-point effort in his first Big Ten game is the most by a true freshman in their first conference outing since Eric Gordon had 25 in his first B1G contest at Iowa in 2008. He is the only Hoosier to score in double digits every game.
Coach Archie Miller's squad is the top shooting team in the Big Ten, and 7th in the country, making 51.7% of its shots through the first four weeks of the season.
IMPRESSIVE DEFENSIVE IMPACT
Coming into the game, Marquette All-American Markus Howard was averaging 26.5 points per game, including a 37-point effort against Bethune Cookman. Hoosier guards Rob Phinisee and Al Durham deserve a great deal of credit for never allowing Howard to become comfortable. They held Howard to just 7 first half points and forced 3 early turnovers as IU jumped out to a 19-4 lead. Howard finished with 18 points, but made just 1-of-5 three-point FG attempts.
The Hoosiers also held the Penn State duo of forward Lamar Stevens (22.4 ppg.) and guard Josh Reeves (11.7 ppg.) to just 15 points in the IU win in Happy Valley. Stevens. Both had season-lows in points with Stevens at 12 and Reeves with just 3.
