Feb. 15, 1943 – After racing off to the best start in program history at 16-0 and 9-0 in the Big Ten, Branch McCracken's Hoosiers lost their first game of the season, a 57-53 decision to Wisconsin. That loss all but ended IU's chances of a second national title, as Illinois ultimately finished the year 17-1 overall and 12-0 in the Big Ten (Indiana and Illinois didn't play each other during the season). Illinois – which was ranked No. 1 nationally at the end of the regular season - received the Big Ten's one and only NCAA Tournament invitation. But when three of its five starters were drafted into military service immediately before the start of the tournament, the Illini opted not to play. McCracken, meanwhile, also departed at season's end for three years of World War II service before returning for the 1946-47 season.
Feb. 15, 1965 – In one of the most anticipated games in IU Fieldhouse history, No. 1 Michigan and All-American Cazzie Russell overcame a seven-point deficit in the final 1:05 of regulation and a four-point deficit in the final 30 seconds of overtime to beat No. 9 Indiana, 96-95, in front of a sold-out crowd. Two weeks later, word leaked that McCracken had given IU President Elvis J. Stahr, Jr., his letter of retirement, effective at season's end. McCracken concluded his IU coaching career with a 364-174 record and two national titles.
Feb. 15, 2015 – Indiana used a then school-record 18-pointers to demolish visiting Minnesota, 90-71. The Hoosiers went 18-of-32 from behind the arc, and broke the school record when Troy Williams connected on IU's 18th and final 3-pointer with 21 seconds remaining. James Blackmon, Jr. led the way with six 3-pointers, while Robert Johnson (5), Williams (2), Colin Hartman (2), Nick Zeisloft (2) and Yogi Ferrell (1) also connected from deep. Indiana eclipsed that school record the following season when it made 19 against Illinois.
A Former Hoosier Fans Should Know
Ken Kaczmarek
Inducted into Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame, 2017
The first Indiana linebacker to earn All-America honors, Ken Kaczmarek helped the Hoosiers to the 1967 Big Ten title and the 1968 Rose Bowl. Kaczmarek, who lettered from 1965-67, capped his career with All-America and first team All-Big Ten accolades. He finished his senior campaign, one in which IU finished ranked fourth in the nation, with 118 stops, second in the B1G, nine for loss, two interceptions and one forced fumble against Purdue, which clinched the Rose Bowl berth. In 1966, Kaczmarek also led the club and finished sixth in the conference with 92 tackles to go along with two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one INT. Upon the conclusion of his IU career, he played in the 1968 Hula Bowl. A South Bend, Ind., native, Kaczmarek graduated with a degree in accounting in 1968, and he earned his MBA from the prestigious Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1971. Kaczmarek was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
Answers to Hoosier Trivia
1. Alan Henderson (1,091 rebounds), Walt Bellamy (1,088) and Kent Benson (1,031). The Hoosier trio rank sixth, seventh and 11th, respectively, in league history. Ohio State's Jerry Lucas is the all-time record holder by a large margin with 1,411.
2. Zero. The closest any has come are runner-up finishes by Maryland (2015, 2017) and Penn State (1996).
3. Both Scott May (1976) and Calbert Cheaney (1993) were consensus national players of the year. Victor Oladipo (2013), meanwhile, was the Sporting News National Player of the Year.
4. Indiana, 1976. That Hoosier team is not only the last team to undefeated during an entire season, but also the last to go unbeaten during the conference. Illinois came close in 2005, but lost its season-finale to Ohio State. In 112 years of Big Ten Basketball, only 12 teams have gone undefeated in conference play. Only four of those occurred in the post-World War II era – Ohio State (1961), Iowa (1970), and Indiana (1975 and 1976).
5. It has never happened. The Big Ten began tracking steals during the 1982-83 season, and no Hoosier has accomplished the feat.
6. Daniel Moore. The Carmel, Ind., product started ten games during the 2008-09 season, averaging 2.5 points, 2.6 assists, and 17.2 minutes/game.
7. Thomas Lewis, 1994. The Hoosier wide receiver was selected 24th overall by the New York Giants. During his four-year pro career, Lewis caught 74 passes for 1,032 yards and five touchdowns. His best season was 1996, when he started 11 times and caught 53 passes for 694 yards and four scores.
8. Mike Woodson (1977-80). Woodson averaged 18.5 as a freshman, 19.9 as a sophomore, 21.0 as a junior, and 19.3 during his injury-shortened senior season. Woodson ranks fifth on IU's all-time scoring list with 2.061 points. Had he played in the 15 games he missed during the 1979-80 season, he'd likely rank third all-time behind only Calbert Cheaney and Steve Alford.
