Bloomington, Indiana – Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass announced today a major gift by IU alumni Ned and Sue Pfau to the Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign for Athletics. The Pfau's gift has helped fund the on-going renovation of the Indiana University Championship Golf Course. In recognition of the gift, the course will be permanently named "The Pfau Course at Indiana University."
"We offer our deepest thanks to Ned and Sue for their generous gift, and we are thrilled to have their name permanently associated with IU Athletics," said IU Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass. "In addition to having a transformative impact on our men's and women's golf programs, The Pfau Course at Indiana University will serve as a wonderful addition to the local, state and Midwest golfing communities. I am equally pleased that throughout the renovation process, Ned and Sue shared our vision of designing a course that was both environmentally and economically sustainable.
"Ned and Sue are long-time supporters of Indiana University and Indiana University Athletics, and this is just the latest example of their extraordinary efforts to positively impact the lives of our students who compete in intercollegiate athletics as well as the university as a whole."
During the golf course renovation, Indiana University has relied on the expertise of Steve Smyers Golf Course Architects and Fuzzy Zoeller of Zoeller, Inc., in its efforts to bring a championship-level golf course to the IU and Bloomington communities. Both have a long and distinguished track record of designing world-class layouts, including Indianapolis' Wolf Run and Heartland Crossing (Smyers), Sellersburg's Covered Bridge Golf Club (Zoeller) and Henryville's Champions Pointe Golf Club (Zoeller), among many others.
The Pfau Course at Indiana University will replace the IU Championship Golf Course, which opened in 1957. The Pfau Course features a new routing plan for its 18-hole layout, which utilizes the land previously occupied by the old course along with an adjacent piece of IU property that housed a portion of the IU Cross Country course.
The new course's namesakes are passionate alumni of Indiana University. After graduating from IU in 1965 with a degree in business finance, Ned built a distinguished career as the president and CEO of Geo. Pfau's Sons Company, Inc., in Jeffersonville, Ind. Sue, meanwhile, graduated from IUPUI in 1966 with a degree in Physical Therapy. Long after they earned their IU degrees, both continued to volunteer and serve Indiana University in a variety of capacities.
Ned served as a member of the board of the IU Foundation and as a past president of IU Varsity Club Board of Directors. He has been honored on numerous occasions for his service and generosity to Indiana University, including with the Presidents Circle Laurel Pin and Distinguished Alumni Service Award.
"Indiana University and Indiana University Athletics have long been important parts of our lives, and we are thrilled to be able to play a part in bringing a beautiful new golf course to the IU men's and women's golf teams, the University and Bloomington community," Ned Pfau said. "Steve Smyers and Fuzzy Zoeller are the best in the business, and they have done a wonderful job of designing a layout that will serve as a stern test for championship-level players and tournaments, while also being playable for the everyday player."
Pfau's gift will go toward the $3 billion campaign, For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign.
For All: The Indiana University Bicentennial Campaign is taking place on all IU-administered campuses including IU Bloomington, IUPUI, IU East, IU Kokomo, IU Northwest, IU South Bend and IU Southeast. The campaign will conclude in June 2020 to coincide with IU's bicentennial year celebration. To learn more about the campaign, its impact and how to participate, visit forall.iu.edu.
