MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Despite jumping out to an early lead, No. 17 Indiana Baseball (0-1) fell to No. 18 Oklahoma in its season opener on Friday afternoon at TicketReturn.com Field by a score of 6-3.
Oklahoma's three home runs in the contest proved to be the difference. Indiana jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, but the Sooners plated two in the second, put up a three-spot in the third and tacked on a run in the fifth to make it a 6-3 contest.
Offensively, senior Logan Sowers led the way for the Hoosiers as he went 3-for-4 with a solo home run. Junior Ryan Fineman also tallied a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 on a pair of base-hits with an RBI. Juniors Matt Lloyd and Logan Kaletha each added a hit as well, as Kaletha's base knock was the first hit of his career with Indiana.
Stiever scattered eight hits in five innings of work, striking out seven and walking two. Indiana's bullpen was strong with debuts from relief pitchers. Freshmean Nick Eaton allowed just one hit and walked one in two innings on the mound, while freshman Austin Long tossed a scoreless eighth to cap off three scoreless innings from the bullpen.
The Hoosiers were off to a fast start in the first inning. A leadoff walk by Kaletha, a single by Llloyd, and a wild pitch allowed junior Luke Miller to drive in a run on an RBI groundout. Later in the frame, Fineman singled up the middle to plate another run to give IU the early 2-0 edge.
Oklahoma knotted things up at two in the bottom of the second. After Stiever struck out the leadoff batter, he surrendered a walk with one out. Cade Cavalli followed with a two-run home run to even the contest up.
The Sooners then broke the game open in the third. After a leadoff walk, OU used back-to-back home runs from Kyle Mendenhall and Steele Walker to make it a three-run game.
Sowers led off the fourth frame with a home run to left centerfield to make it 5-3 in favor of Oklahoma.
After Indiana stranded to runners in the top of the fifth, OU added some insurance with an RBI double to increase the lead to 6-3.
The Hoosiers had a chance to make some noise in the sixth loading the bases, but were unable to get any runs in return.
IU returns to action tomorrow at TicketReturn.com Field as it takes on Kansas State at 11 a.m.
