LUBBOCK, Texas – The Indiana men's tennis team (5-4) were dealt a road loss by the No. 24 Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center. Texas Tech took a tight doubles point and won three out of six singles matches.
Following a win at the third doubles spot, the extra point came down to the top two spots in which the Hoosiers were fighting at both spots. At the second spot, juniors Antonio Cembellin and Afonso Salgado led 5-4 at the second spot in an attempt to tie doubles but the Red Raiders secured the doubles point with a 6-2 win at the top spot.
It didn't take long for IU to get that point back as Cembellin outlasted Alex Sendegeya 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
At the six singles spot, Salgado fell in the first set but stormed back in the second set with a 6-3 win to send it to a third set. In a back-and-forth third set, Salgado fell 7-5 and Texas Tech regained a lead they wouldn't give back.
Leading 2-1, the Red Raiders pushed their lead to 3-1 with a win at the third spot. IU wouldn't go down without a fight as sophomore Bennett Crane came back from a first set defeat to win sets two and three.
Two matches in the third set remained, senior Raheel Manji at the top spot and sophomore Zac Brodney at the fifth spot. With a 7-5 third set win, Tommy Mylnikov knocked off Manji and clinched the win for Texas Tech. At the fifth spot, Brodney fell in a third set tiebreak, 10-8.
The Hoosiers now turn their attention to in-state rival Purdue for a match on Wednesday, Feb. 21. That match in West Lafayette will begin at 6 PM.
