Trivia answers are at the end.
On This Date:
Feb. 21, 1921 – Led by 6'0" center and All-American Everett Dean, Indiana (15-2/6-1) was tied for first place in the league standings with four games remaining, pursuing the school's first-ever conference championship. But the Hoosiers fell to Iowa 22-15, the first of four straight losses to end the season. Despite the late-season struggles, Indiana did establish a new school record for wins (15) and excitement surrounding the program was such that game tickets – which cost 50 cents to open the season – were upped to 75 cents by year's end.
Feb. 21, 1981 – Two days removed from a 78-65 loss to Lute Olson's 12th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes, Bob Knight's Hoosiers bounced back with a 74-63 Assembly Hall victory over Minnesota. That win was the first of 10 straight to end the season, culminating with the 63-50 victory over North Carolina for the 1981 NCAA Championship. Ranked No. 16 entering the Minnesota game, IU would climb to No. 9 before the start of the NCAA Tournament. The third-seeded Hoosiers easily handled all five of their NCAA foes, winning each game by double figures.
Feb. 21, 1987 – Mired in a 15-of-52 shooting slump entering the contest, Steve Alford broke loose for 24 points to lead No. 2 Indiana to an 84-75 win over No. 7 Iowa in a critical game in the Big Ten Championship race. The win lifted IU to 23-2 overall and 14-1 in the Big Ten, while Iowa slipped to 23-4, 10-4 in the league, and out of contention for the regular season crown. Ultimately, IU and Purdue would tie for the league crown at 15-3.
Feb. 21, 1993 – In one of the oddest statistical lines you will ever see, IU's Greg Graham made just 2-of-7 shots from the field but finished with 32 points to lead top-ranked Indiana to a convincing 93-78 victory over No. 14 Purdue. After making all 10 of his free throw attempts in the first half, Graham converted 16-of-18 in the second half to finish 26-of-28 for the game. Graham's 26 made free throws remains an IU and Big Ten individual game record.
Feb. 21, 2008 – It was the final full day of Kelvin Sampson era, as he announced his resignation one day later following an NCAA investigation into impermissible phone calls made to prospective recruits. Following Sampson's resignation, Dan Dakich was tabbed as the team's interim coach. Dakich led IU to three-point wins over Northwestern and Ohio State, but the Hoosiers dropped four of their final five, including first-round exits from both the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments.
A Former Hoosier Fans Should Know
Inducted into Indiana University Athletics Hall of Fame, 2016
Diane Stephenson's contributions to the Indiana softball program span from her playing career to her time as head coach. In 1977, Stephenson became the first female to receive an athletic scholarship from Indiana University. She made an immediate impact, leading the team in batting average in both 1978 and 1981. In 1981, she became the first Indiana softball All-American, receiving first team honors after batting .359 and posting a 10-2 record in the circle. Stephenson led her team to back-to-back AIAW College World Series appearances in 1979 and 1980, including a fifth place finish in 1979 and a runner-up finish in 1980. Stephenson took over as head coach in 1988 and posted three consecutive winning seasons, including a 45-18 record with a 16-8 Big Ten mark in 1990. In 1994, Stephenson led the team to a Big Ten championship, a NCAA Regional appearance and a 49-16 record, the highest single-season win total in program history. For her efforts, Stephenson was named the Regional Coach of the Year and the program's first Big Ten Coach of the Year. Two years later, she guided the team to an additional NCAA Tournament appearance.
Answers to Hoosier Trivia
1. Rod Wilmont. Wilmont made 7-of-17 3-pointers on Jan. 13, 2007, in a 84-74 win at Penn State.
2. Jay Edwards (53.6%, 59-of-110, 1987-88); Steve Alford (53.0%, 107-of-202, 1986-87); Greg Graham (51.4%, 57-of-111, 1992-93)
3. Jennifer (Hooker) Brinegar. Brinegar won seven individual conference titles from 1980-82 – the 1,650 three times, the 500 free twice, and the 200 freestyle once. Like King, Brinegar was also a standout on the international level, swimming for Team USA in the 1976 Olympics.
4. 1985. Following a disappointing 16-13 regular season, Bob Knight's Hoosiers earned an NIT trip and defeated Richmond, Marquette and Tennessee before losing to UCLA in the Championship game in New York City. Since that season, IU has lost first-round NIT games in 2005 and 2017.
5. 59-58 vs. Michigan State, 1/7/01; 74-73 vs. Duke, 3/21/02; 73-72 vs. Kentucky, 12/10/11; 81-73 vs. Michigan, 2/2/13.
6. Steve Alford (1984-87), Calbert Cheaney (1990-93), A.J. Guyton (1997-00).
7. Dane Fife (Michigan State), Michael Lewis (Nebraska), A.J. Guyton (Northwestern). In addition, former IU basketball manager Mike Schrage is an assistant coach at Ohio State.
8. 1973. In a run that all Hoosier fans should know about, Swimming Coach James 'Doc' Counsilman and Diving Coach Hobie Billingsley guided Indiana to six consecutive NCAA titles from 1968-73. In addition to those titles, Indiana also placed in the top five at the NCAAs from 1964-77. Had it not been for the fact IU wasn't allowed to compete in the NCAA team competition from 1961-63 due to infractions committed by the football program, that top-5 NCAA streak would actually stretch from 1959-77 (IU's individuals were allowed to compete at NCAAs and won a total of 90 All-America awards during the three-year stretch, but their results were not counted in the team competition).
