Indiana Wins Two Titles on Opening Night of Big Ten Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 3-ranked Indiana University men's swimming and diving team got off to a historic start on Wednesday, winning two titles on the first night of the 2018 Big Ten Championships at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
The Hoosiers successfully defended both their relay titles on Wednesday night and sits in first place with a total of 128 points. Michigan and Ohio State are tied for second place overall with 108 points each.
With the two wins, IU has won the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays in back-to-back seasons for the first time in school history.
The Hoosiers got the meet off to a terrific start, winning the 200 medley Big Ten title for the sixth time in program history, as the team of Gabriel Fantoni, Ian Finnerty, Vini Lanza and Ali Khalafalla touched first in a time of 1:23.95. The time is a NCAA A cut and the second-best in school history.
The freshman Fantoni had the best 50 backstroke leg in the field, splitting a 20.95 to give IU the lead. Lanza was also outstanding in the relay, recording the best 50 fly leg with his mark of 19.98.
IU was dominant in the 800 freestyle relay, as the team of Mohamed Samy, Blake Pieroni, Vini Lanza and Ian Finnerty won with a school record, pool record and NCAA A cut time of 6:11.50. The time is also the best in the nation this season.
Samy had a great leadoff leg for IU, splitting a 200 free personal-best and NCAA B cut time of 1:33.19 that ranks him as the second-best performer in the event in school history.
The No. 3-ranked Hoosiers will continue competition at the 2018 Big Ten Championships on Thursday morning with the prelims of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 1-meter dive. The action gets started at 12:00 p.m. ET at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
