Indiana’s final stop before opening conference play
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers have set the stage for a big weekend in the Bay Area with a four-game slate at the Santa Clara Invitational. Following a two week stretch of training and recovery in the home pool, Indiana will meet a quartet of California programs at Sullivan Aquatic Center. That's headlined by a ranked showdown with UC Davis, their ninth top-25 opponent of the year, on Saturday night.
Although the weekend will be tough, the Hoosiers hope for a friendly crowd in Santa Clara as three players, including scoring leader Jennifer Beadle (15), make a homecoming return to the San Francisco Bay. These games are Indiana's last before kicking off the CWPA schedule next weekend.
Last Action: Triton Invite
Indiana makes their first pool return in two weeks, having most recently competed at UC San Diego in the Triton Invitational. Their first game of the slate, a rematch with the hosting Tritons, delivered on the promise of a hard-fought contest but the Hoosiers fell in overtime, 9-8.
Indiana finished the weekend with split results, going 2-2 with wins on each day. In their Triton Invite finale, against No. 11 Long Beach State, Jennifer Beadle found a hat trick in the first six minutes of the game to spark an 11-7 win over the 49ers.
New Year, New Playmakers
One of the takeaways from the Triton Invite was the effort Indiana saw from their freshman class in a hostile road environment. Juli Hilovsky tossed two assists, a career high, in IU's overtime contest with the Tritons before breaking that mark with three later that day against Iona. Jessica Rodriguez scored a career-high two goals versus the Gaels, along with one assist, and set another career mark with three assists against Long Beach State.
Indiana's four-woman freshman class accounts for 18 goals, 16 assists, and 10 steals through their first 11 games of the year.
Saturday Splash with Aggies
Indiana's lone top-20 battle of the weekend takes place on Saturday night, when they face No. 10 UC Davis for the first time since 2015. The Hoosiers hold a narrow 5-4 lead in the series and have won three of the last five meetings, but the Aggies took the most recent meeting with a 9-5 win. Saturday's game will be just their fourth against one another in a neutral pool.
Leading from the Front
The senior class is driving Indiana's success in the pool this season. Jennifer Beadle and Kelly Matthews are making plays on the offensive end and share the top spot on Indiana's goal leaderboard, scoring 15 apiece with six combined hat tricks. Sarah Myers is patrolling the defensive end, recording six games with more than one steal and a career-high six against McKendree earlier this season.
Hoosier senior Jessica Gaudreault is holding the line between the pipes in her final season with the IU cap. She has 84 saves and four games with 10-plus blocks this season, rising to third on Indiana's all-time saves leaderboard (781).
Hoosiers Back in the Bay
This weekend is a special occasion for three Hoosiers, who return to play in front of friends and family in close proximity to their hometowns. Jennifer Beadle (Pleasanton) and Mackenzie Rosenthal (Saratoga) make their final career homecoming appearances, while Carlie Crumbaugh (Moraga) makes her first collegiate visit since joining the Hoosiers this year.
Additionally, Sunday's game with CSU Monterey Bay will reunite the Hoosiers with current CSUMB head coach Emily Schmit (Indiana, 2001). Schmit, an Oakland native, won two letters as part of Indiana's inaugural water polo team.
Of Note...
• Seniors Sarah Myers (94) and Sarah Young (89) are close to becoming the next Hoosiers to cross the 100-goal career milestone.
• Kelly Matthews (222) is two goals away from tying Krista Peterson (224, 2002-05) for the fourth-highest goal tally in program history.
