PORT CHARLOTTE, FLA. – Seventeenth-ranked Indiana baseball moved to 5-1 on the year following a 4-0 blanking of the Boston College Eagles on Saturday afternoon from day two of the Snowbird Baseball Classic.
Junior Pauly Milto confused the Eagles all day, as eight strikeouts and just four hits propelled the righty to his second win of the year in a complete game effort.
Junior Matt Lloyd collected his first home run of 2018 to go along with a double, while sophomore Matt Gorski collected three hits, including a double and run scored. Junior Luke Miller and senior Logan Sowers each picked up two hits. Miller added an RBI to his day at the plate, while junior Ryan Fineman and freshman Elijah Dunham also drove in a run.
The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead to open the game, as Lloyd launched Dan Metzdorf's offering over the fence in left field. Miller followed with an infield single and found his way to second base on a balk. A single from Sowers moved Miller to third, while Dunham's sacrifice fly bought in Indiana's second run. Milto dealt a flawless bottom half, as the righty needed just nine pitches, all of which were strikes, to retire the Eagles in order and pick up a quick two strikeouts.
Gorski led off the second stanza with a double, while a single from freshman Cole Barr and sacrifice bunt from sophomore Jeremy Houston pushed Gorski to third base. Miller singled to score Gorski and up Indiana's lead to 3-0. Milto made quick work of Boston College in the second and used a 3-6-1 double play in addition to a strikeout to erase a one-out single.
Metzdorf was able to keep the Hoosiers at bay in the fourth and fifth frames, as Boston College was able to work through doubles by junior Logan Kaletha in the sixth and Lloyd in the seventh.
Milto continued to overpower the Eagles and carried eight strikeouts into the seventh frame. Boston College tried to get some offense going with a leadoff single, but a fly out and double play quickly moved things to the eighth inning, with Indiana maintaining a 3-0 edge.
Sowers opened the eighth with a double to center field and came around to score on Fineman's RBI knocker to right.
Indiana closes out the weekend on Sunday with a 10:30 a.m. first pitch against Chicago State.
