Streak Comes To An End As IU Women’s Basketball Falls At Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Indiana Women's Basketball saw its eight-game win streak snapped on Saturday afternoon as it fell to Iowa, 75-62 in the regular season finale at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Senior forward Amanda Cahill led the way with 14 points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn followed with 13 points as she went 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Senior guard Tyra Buss added double figures with 12 points freshman guard Bendu Yeaney also joined her teammates in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
It was a career day for Buss, who became the program's all-time assist leader, surpassing Tisha Hill's 533 assists in the first quarter of the game. She finished the day with a game-high seven assists and sits with 540 career dishes. In addition, the Mt. Carmel, Ill. native secured her third-straight 600 point season, which is the first for any player at Indiana.
The Hoosiers (16-13, 9-7 B1G) shot just 32.8 percent from the floor but connected on 13 3-pointers in the loss to shoot 50 percent from beyond the arc. It was no match for the Hawkeyes, who shot 52.7 percent from the floor on the afternoon, led by junior forward Megan Gustafson who had 36 points and 15 rebounds. IU was also outrebounded, 43-31, and shot just 50 percent from the free throw line.
The game started off with Indiana holding a 5-4 lead after a Buss triple with 7:12 to play, but Iowa would respond with a 14-0 run which featured over six minutes of scoreless action by the Hoosiers. IU trailed 20-8 after the first complete quarter, shooting just 15.4 percent in the opening frame. In the second, Yeaney opened scoring with a 3-pointer followed by Cahill scoring five-straight points to get IU back within five, 21-17, with 7:17 left to play. But another run for Iowa, this time a 9-0 run, pushed their lead back to 33-19.
Iowa (23-6, 11-5 B1G) would take a 42-24 lead at the break, as Indiana came out in the third backed by seven of freshman guard Keyanna Warthen's nine points on the day. The Hoosiers would narrowly outscore the Hawkeyes in the quarter, 12-11, but neither team shot particularly well. Both teams would put up 27.8 field goal percentages in the third as Iowa led 53-36. The Hoosiers would shoot 50 percent in the final period, but went just 4-for-8 from the line as Iowa closed out the win on its Senior Day.

"Well I'm disappointed. Especially in the first half, I think we dug ourselves too big of a hole. A lot of that had to do with them scoring the ball, but us not doing a very good job on Gustafson. Missing layups, I think it's a closer game at halftime and down the stretch if we could hit some more shots. It looked like everyone was trying to make the homerun play. I'm disappointed we couldn't figure out and do a better job with Gustafson, but I wanted us to score the ball better to give ourselves a chance to win."

- Buss also marked her third-straight 600-point season, becoming the first player in IU history to score 600 points in three-straight seasons. She has 603 points this season. The Indiana single season scoring record is 642.
- Buss scored 12 points and increased her career scoring total to 2,204. She connected on three 3-point field goals to push her career total to 192.
- Amanda Cahill scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Cahill now has 1,746 career points and 1,057 career rebounds.
- The Hoosiers had four players score in double-figures against Iowa.
- Indiana connected on 13-of-26 (50 percent) from 3-point range. The 13 3-point field goals are a season-high for the Hoosiers. Indiana has hit 10 or more 3-pointers in five games this season. Over their last two games Indiana has shot 25-of-49 (51 percent) from long range.
