Hoosiers Win Thriller In Four Overtimes To Advance To Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals

INDIANAPOLIS – In an absolute thriller, No. 7 seed Indiana prevailed over No. 10 seed Michigan State in four overtimes, 111-109, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
In its completion, the game proved to be the longest game in Big Ten Tournament and Bankers Life Fieldhouse history (since the venue opened in 1999), playing 60 minutes to get to a final result as senior forward Amanda Cahill set a new career-high with 38 points on 14-for-20 shooting including a 5-for-7 mark from the 3-point line, nine rebounds, six assists and four blocks as she a new IU record for points scored in a Big Ten Tournament game. Her 38 points were also tied fourth-best single game scoring performance in school history.
Senior guard Tyra Buss scored her 17th 20-point game of the season with 24 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals. All of IU's 111 points were accounted for by starters as freshman guard Bendu Yeaney scored 19 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists to go along with a block and a steal. Freshman guard Jaelynn Penn contributed 16 points on 7-for-13 shooting while grabbing seven rebounds. Rounding out the IU scoring was junior forward Kym Royster who dropped 14 points and grabbed four rebounds.
The Hoosiers shot 48.9 percent on the night and 45.8 percent from the 3-point line, knocking down 11 triples in the win. IU also shot 73.7 percent from the free throw line while dishing out a combined 20 assists.
Michigan State posted nearly identical numbers to the Hoosiers, shooting 47.1 percent from the floor, 40 percent from the 3-point line and 75 percent from the free throw line (21-for-28). The Spartans (17-13) won the battle of the boards, 53-42, and racked up 14 blocks on the night. Indiana opened up the game on a 9-2 advantage after a Cahill triple and Buss drive to the bucket. MSU would cut the deficit down to two, but Cahill and Royster combined to go back up six with 3:37 remaining.
IU would take its largest lead of the game in the second quarter, going up 13 with under two minutes to play. A 3-pointer from Michigan State's Taryn McCutcheon would cut the lead down to 45-37 at halftime. IN the third, Indiana would hold on to its lead despite being cut down to one with 5:20 remaining. It would spark a 7-2 run to end the quarter as Cahill scored five of those points to give her team a 58-52 lead after the third.
Leading by as many as eight in the fourth quarter, the Spartans would outscore the Hoosiers 22-16 in the final period of regulation. Michigan State would tie the game up Cahill drained a 3-pointer with 1:43 to go to put her team up four, 72-68. But Michigan State seemed to always have the answer as a got back-to-back buckets to tie the score at 72-all. It would be Cahill who provided an offensive board and putback with 25 seconds remaining, but once again, Michigan State's Shay Colley would score the equalizer and push the game into overtime, tied 74-74.
In the first overtime, neither team was ahead by more than two as Indiana looked to end the game after Cahill found Royster open underneath with 20.9 seconds remaining. But answering on the other end was MSU's Victoria Gaines to send it into double overtime. After a missed layup by Buss, MSU seemed to have had the game winner on a Colley roll-in off the glass as the clock buzzed. However, a clock malfunction would reverse the call and signal an end to the first overtime tied at 80-all.
The Spartan's lead grew to four in double overtime on a 3-pointer by Colley. Buss would get the ball inside to Royster while a 3-pointer rattled in for Yeaney to go up one, 89-88, with 1:38 remaining in double overtime. McCutcheon would go 1-for-2 in the bonus with 1:10 to tie it up and Colley looked to have the winner with but Cahill's drive with four seconds remaining hit the glass and into the net as the game move into a third overtime.
Another back and forth battle was exchanged, with Yeaney providing the equalizer with 18 seconds remaining to tie it up at 99-99 to go into the record-breaking quadruple overtime. Buss would increase IU's lead to three, 104-101, with 3:17 to go. Two lead changes would be exchanged in the next minute and a half before Buss came up big with a 3-point dagger with 40 seconds remaining. A pair at the line by Gaines set MSU back into a tie. Indiana would hold for the final shot as Cahill off the screen was fouled on the way up and sank two at the line that would go on to be the game winners.

- The 4OT game was the longest game in the history of the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament, which started in 1982. It is the longest in the Men's or Women's Big Ten Tournament and ties the longest game of any NCAA women's college basketball this season. Creighton and Drake, 108-100, on Dec. 3, 2017.
- The 111 points by Indiana are a Big Ten Tournament single game record.
