BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Senior rower Siena Patty has been named one of the February Student-Athletes of the Month by N4A, a diverse educational service and professional non-profit organization.
The organization is comprised of student-athlete development professionals that work with students from all walks of life on a day-to-day basis and encounter extraordinary stories of individuals overcoming adversities. Although the odds may be stacked against them, these individuals have a drive deep inside them to succeed in the face of overwhelming challenges.
In an effort to recognize and celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of these individuals, the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals (N4A) will highlight one or more student-athletes each month for their determination to achieve success regardless of personal, academic and emotional challenges.
Patty arrived at Indiana University as a member of the rowing team. Like many first-year students, it was a challenge to adjust to college life, especially balancing the responsibilities of Division I athletics.
Struggling to adjust to her busy schedule, Patty began to struggle mentally, physically, and academically. She began battling an eating disorder that would eventually consume her life. On the cusp of being academically dismissed from the university, she found a support system in her roommate, coach, academic advisor, parents, as well as a counselor.
"My support system helped me realize that it's okay to ask for help," Patty said. "My friends and family were there for me and held me accountable during my recovery process and encouraged me to work hard to make a comeback."
Patty was able to overcome her struggles and regain her physical, and more importantly, her mental health. She declared a new major, outdoor recreation, parks, and human ecology, which was an ideal fit for her and became a very dependable teammate for the Hoosiers rowing team.
Patty's motivation and determination has allowed her to use her college experience as a tremendous opportunity for growth and development.
"Throughout my experience at IU, I have learned to use the various resources around me to help me reach my full potential," Patty said. "Whether that is the athletic trainers, coaches, friends or counselors, they have all played a pivotal role in my success as a student-athlete."
