Weekend begins with another Triton clash
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana's water polo team heads west for a testing weekend at the 2018 Triton Invitational, hosted by the University of California San Diego. The invite brings half of the top 25 to La Jolla for a tournament-style competition, and the Hoosiers begin with the hosting Tritons.
The clash with 15th-ranked UC San Diego is sure to be the latest in a series of close games, as six of the last nine meetings came down to one or two scores. And with their next game coming against either Iona or No. 4 UCLA, Indiana's opener will be the first of several challenges this weekend. The Hoosiers aim to improve on their ninth-place finish at this tournament two seasons ago.
Holding Down the Home Front
The last time Indiana took the pool it led to a successful weekend in Bloomington. The Hoosiers went 4-0 at the Hoosier Invitational two weeks ago, securing two more ranked wins over No. 14 UC Santa Barbara and No. 25 Iona. The top performance of the weekend came against the Gauchos, when Mollie Williams scored four goals and Jessica Rodriguez provided the 7-6 game winner in her career home debut.
After spending the last two weeks out of competition, recovering from a high-volume start and calibrating their tactics, the Hoosiers are ready for another game day.
Embracing Fundamentals
Indiana has turned their focus to the defensive side of the ball at the start of the season and the results are showing. The Hoosiers have killed 43-of-53 (.811) opponent power plays and forced 72 steals as a team.
Leading that defensive effort are a pair of seniors, Jessica Gaudreault and Sarah Myers. Gaudreault has over 10 saves in three games this year with five scoreless quarters; Myers leads the Hoosiers with 15 steals including a career-high six swipes versus McKendree.
Hoosiers Homecoming
Although Indiana is on the road this weekend, two players are making return visits to their home city of San Diego. Jennifer Hanling (Coronado) makes her first career appearance to a friendly crowd, while senior Sarah Young (La Jolla) makes the final San Diego appearance.
Playing at the high school level 20 minutes from UC San Diego's home pool, Young looks to cap a career of top performances in front of her home crowd.
Commencing with a Classic
For Indiana, their weekend couldn't begin any bigger. The Hoosiers and Tritons have a near-even series split going into their 20th all-time meeting, and all 19 of those wins were hard-earned. With a win, IU would tie their series with UC San Diego.
These teams met at the UCSB Winter Invitational in IU's second game of the season. The Hoosiers won, 8-6, led by Sarah Young's hat trick and three assists from Kelly Matthews. Jessica Gaudreault made a season-high 13 saves.
Not in Her House
For an outstanding effort between the pipes at the Hoosier invitational, senior Jessica Gaudreault received CWPA Defensive Player of the Week honors. Indiana's first weekly honor of the season came from Gaudreault's 24 saves with four scoreless quarters and two 10-save performances in her pair of 32-minute shifts.
Gaudreault's peak performance came against the Gauchos, where she made 10 saves with a career-high three steals and a fourth-quarter shutout.
Of Note...
• Seniors Sarah Myers (92) and Sarah Young (86) are close to becoming the next Hoosiers to cross the 100-goal career milestone.
• Kelly Matthews (219) is five goals away from tying Krista Peterson (224, 2002-05) for the fourth-most goals in program history.
• Indiana opened at No. 12 in the initial A.R.R.I.A.G.A. rankings with an offensive expectation of -1.7 (t-15th, NCAA) and a defensive expectation of -3.4 (8th, NCAA).
