March 2, 1905 – And you thought this year's team had some difficult turnarounds on the schedule; on March 2, 1905, Coach Zora Clevenger's Hoosiers knocked off Buhl Athletic Club, 34-21. The game marked the fourth of a six-game road trip that had IU playing on the road six consecutive days. The trip started with a loss at Butler (44-29) Feb. 27, followed by losses at Allegeny (39-17) and Hiram (Ohio) College (49-18). A victory over Rayen Athletic Club (34-20) preceded the Buhl AC victory, and IU ended the trip with setbacks at Buchtel (48-24) and Ohio State (66-12).
March 2, 1940 – Branch McCracken's Hoosiers traveled to West Lafayette and handed Purdue a 51-46 defeat, completing the first-ever two-game season sweep for IU against the Boilermakers. The victory was important for reasons beyond beginning to turn the tide on a series that Purdue had dominated up until then (Purdue led the series 51-11 heading into the 1939-40 season). Without it, IU wouldn't have won its first national title. When the regular season concluded, Purdue had won the Big Ten title with a 10-2 record, one game ahead of Indiana at 9-3. But with no automatic berths for the NCAA Tournament (which was in its second year), the committee selected Indiana – based on its two-game sweep of Purdue – as the Big Ten/Midwest representative in the eight-team NCAA Tournament. IU went on to defeat Springfield (48-24), Duquesne (39-30) and Kansas (60-42) to win the 1940 NCAA Championship.
March 2, 1953 – One day removed from defeating Illinois 91-79 to win the program's first-ever undisputed Big Ten Championship, IU accomplishes another first. The AP, UPI and International News Services all ranked Indiana No. 1 in their weekly national polls, representing the first time in school history IU was a unanimous No. 1. Seventeen days later IU would live up to that ranking when it knocked off Kansas 69-68 to win the 1953 NCAA title.
March 2, 1980 – With the Big Ten title on the line, the No. 13 Hoosiers capped one of their all-time great late-season charges with a 76-73 overtime win against No. 9 Ohio State to win the Big Ten Championship. The nation's preseason No. 1 team, IU raced to a 4-0 start before losing All-American Mike Woodson to a herniated disc in his back. Woodson underwent surgery, and Indiana struggled. The unranked Hoosiers sat at 14-7 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten when Woodson miraculously returned on Feb. 14, and they proceeded to win their final six regular season games to catch and then pass Ohio State for the league title. Woodson averaged 40.3 minutes/game in those final six contests, and was ultimately named Big Ten MVP despite missing 12 of 18 Big Ten contests.
March 2, 2002 – With a share of the Big Ten title on the line, Mike Davis' Hoosiers shook off a slow start to come away with a 79-67 win over Northwestern to earn IU its 20th Big Ten Championship. Tom Coverdale scored 20 points and Jarrad Odle added 16 points and 10 rebounds as IU ended the season in a four-way tie atop the league standings with Ohio State, Wisconsin and Illinois. It marks the only time in Big Ten history that there has been a four-way tie for the title.

Hickcox is one of the legendary swimmers during James "Doc" Counsilman's heyday. During his three seasons in Bloomington (1967-69), Hickcox won eight NCAA titles, eight Big Ten championships, and six AAU titles. At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Hickcox won gold in the 200 and 400 IMs, swam on the gold medal winning 400 medley relay, and won silver in the 100 backstroke. During a span of 16 months from 1967-68, Hickcox set eight world records in various events, and he was named World Swimmer of the Year in 1968. Two of his world records – in the 200 and 400 IMs – were subsequently broken by his Hoosier teammate, Gary Hall, Sr.
