BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Tied 1-1 in the seventh inning, 12th-ranked Indiana baseball (10-4) scored two runs to secure a 3-1 victory over the Pacific Tigers on Saturday afternoon, which evened the series at one game apiece.
The Hoosiers got another strong starting pitching performance for the second day in a row, as junior Pauly Milto went seven innings, allowing just three hits and a run while striking out nine batters, which matches his career-high against N.C. State in the Lexington Regional last season. With the win, Milto improves to 3-1 on the year and lowered his ERA to 2.36.
Offensively, Indiana got a two-double effort from senior Colby Stratten, who started at second base on Saturday. Junior Logan Kaletha reached base three times in the game as he doubled and walked twice, while senior Logan Sowers drove in two runs.
A leadoff double for Kaletha in fifth inning was the fourth of the year for the junior and his eighth extra base hit overall. Lloyd had a productive at bat as he moved Kaletha to third on his groundout to second. Sowers followed with a second consecutive productive at bat, as he hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Kaletha and giving the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
The game was decided in the seventh inning. It started with Pacific tying the game up at one. Tyler Ryan led off the frame with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a groundout to first. That was followed by an RBI groundout by Nate Verlin to make it a 1-1 game.
Indiana rallied in the bottom half. Stratten led off with his second double of the game. Senior Laren Eustace came in to pinch run for Stratten and scored the go ahead run on an error by the first baseman during sophomore Jeremy Houston's at bat. Houston then advanced two bases on a failed pickoff and scored on a fielder's choice by Sowers.
The Tigers had runners on first and second with the go ahead run at the plate in the top of the ninth, but junior Matt Lloyd forced the strikeout to pick up his second save of the season.
Indiana and Pacific face off in the rubber game of this three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is slated for 1:05 p.m. from Bart Kaufman Field.
