All four Indiana wrestlers are back on the mat for Thursday’s evening session
CLEVELAND – A handful of heartbreaking late match swings sent the Hoosiers to the consolation bracket in the opening session of the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships at Quicken Loans Arena. All four Indiana wrestlers were tied or leading their bout cards in the second period, but fell victim to a quartet of opponent comebacks.
Juniors Elijah Oliver (125) and Cole Weaver (141) were inches from the second round but fell out of championship contention with one-point losses by decision. Oliver dropped a 5-4 result to No. 9 Ronnie Bresser (Oregon State), while Weaver's 4-3 loss to Vince Turk (Iowa) came after a dramatic push in the final 10 seconds.
Redshirt junior Bryce Martin landed on the unfortunate side of a 9-1 major decision to No. 9 Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven), a match that broke open on one crucial play. A similar fate fell upon redshirt sophomore Devin Skatzka (174), who dropped an 8-4 decision to No. 9 Keaton Subjeck (Stanford).
Bout No. 13: Elijah Oliver (Indiana) vs. #9 Ronnie Bresser (Oregon State)
Bresser got the first takedown after trading some opening shots and Oliver escaped after 23 seconds. Oliver gained the lead on a takedown before the first period ended, regaining control of the riding time clock in the process.
Bresser escaped early in the second to tie the match and regained a small lead on a penalty called against Oliver. Bresser aimed to extend his lead with a deep single with short time, yet Oliver fought off the attempt to stay within a takedown after two periods. Oliver started down and escaped to halve his deficit, and the two entered a scramble late in the third period clock, but Oliver couldn't connect for the match-winner.
Bout No. 44: #16 Cole Weaver (Indiana) vs. Vince Turk (Iowa)
Turk nearly scored on the first shot but his move carried Weaver out of play. In response, Weaver got deep on a double, lifting Turk for a hard drop and the first points of the match. Weaver rode out the short time and started down in the second, extending his lead to 3-0 on an escape after Turk's one-minute ride.
The match reached its shocking climax in the final 10 seconds. Turk elected for a neutral start and, with only short time on the clock, found a takedown and two nearfall points on the mat's edge for the stunning 4-3 comeback win.
Bout No. 93: Bryce Martin (Indiana) vs. #9 Chance Marsteller (Lock Haven)
Fans knew this match—and this weight class as a whole—would be a slugfest. Martin and Marsteller didn't score in the first period but traded plenty of blows. Marsteller broke the deadlock after starting the second period in the down position and breaking free for the one-point lead.
With short time remaining in the second period, Lock Haven's grappler made the decisive move. Marsteller followed the first takedown of the match with four swipes to open a 7-0 lead. Martin escaped early in the third but couldn't chip away any further, and Marsteller's late takedown pushed the result to a 9-1 major decision.
Bout 109: Devin Skatzka (Indiana) vs. #9 Keaton Subjeck (Stanford)
Subjeck made the most of an opportunity after Skatzka dominated the match from the opening whistle. The Hoosier sophomore earned his first drop in the last 20 seconds of the first period and nearly rode Subjeck to the buzzer, but Subjeck broke free with a second remaining. The Stanford man started on top and built a decent amount of ride time, but Skatzka caused chaos in the center for a reversal.
Trailing 4-2 entering the final period, Subjeck made a late move that flipped the script. Skatzka built a long ride in the third period to flip the riding clock in his favor, but Stanford's grappler gained a sense of urgency and scored a takedown with nearfall to win, 8-4.
