BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Softball dropped a 9-2 decision to Northwestern on Saturday in the Hoosier Classic. IU sophomore Gabbi Jenkins collected three hits in the game and added an RBI.
Indiana put a runner on in each of the three innings – two of which were via singles by Jenkins – but the Hoosiers couldn't capitalize.
Northwestern took advantage of four walks in the third to take a 2-0 lead, including drawing two free passes with the bases loaded.
The Wildcats added a run in the fifth as Rachel Lewis was hit by a pitch before advancing to second on a passed ball and stealing third. Lily Novak then brought her in on an RBI fielder's choice.
A grand slam from Northwestern's Morgan Nelson pushed the lead to 7-0 in the sixth as she brought home Lewis, Marissa Panko and Sabrina Rabin on a two-out shot to left center.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth thanks to an RBI double by freshman Maddie Westmoreland to score junior Sarah Galovich, who reached on a one-out walk.
However, Northwestern responded in the seventh by putting up two runs on a pair of solo homers by Brooke Marquez and Kenna Wilkey.
Indiana got one back in bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by Jenkins to score senior Rachel O'Malley, who knocked a one-out double to get on base. However, the Hoosiers would get no closer as a groundout ended the game.
Junior Tara Trainer took the loss for Indiana, allowing two runs and four walks while striking out four. Morgan Newport earned the complete game victory for Northwestern, surrendering six hits and striking out six.
IU closes out play in the Hoosier Classic with a Sunday doubleheader. Indiana will face Green Bay at 11 a.m. and UIC at 1 p.m. It's a rematch of Friday's lineup that saw Indiana collect victories against both teams. Admission to all home games is free of charge.
