March 21, 1979 – Butch Carter connected on a 20-footer with four seconds remaining to lift Indiana to a 53-52 win over No. 15 Purdue to capture the NIT Championship in front of nearly 15,000 fans at New York's Madison Square Garden. Keying the Hoosiers' win was the job they did on Purdue center Joe Barry Carroll, who scored 42 points in an NIT semifinal win over Alabama and was averaging 28.0 points in the NIT before the championship match-up. But Carroll was held to 14 and missed the front end of a late one-and-one free-throw opportunity that set up Carter's game-winner.
March 21, 1991 – Indiana Women's Basketball opens the WNIT with a record-setting performance, eclipsing the school record for points in a 110-71 victory over UAB. The 110 points broke the previous mark of 103, set less than two months earlier in a win against Wisconsin. The 110 points remained on the books for 23 years until it was eclipsed in 2014 in the first game of the Teri Moren era. In Moren's debut game as the Hoosiers' head coach, Tyra Buss scored 18 points and was one of six Hoosiers to reach double figures in a 115-54 victory over Gardner Webb.
March 21, 1992 – Calbert Cheaney scored 30 points and Alan Henderson added 19 as the fifth-ranked Hoosiers defeated LSU in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Boise, Idaho. LSU was led by Shaquille O'Neal, who scored 27 of his game-high 36 points in the second half to keep the Tigers close. But after a pair of O'Neal free throws cut IU's lead to 73-70 win 4:04 remaining, Damon Bailey and Cheaney connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to extend the lead and ultimately send Bob Knight to the Sweet 16 for the 12th time in his first 21 years as IU's head coach.
March 21, 2001 – Mike Davis has the 'interim' removed from his job title and is named the head coach of the Hoosier men's basketball program. After assuming the job on an interim basis following Bob Knight's firing in the fall of 2000, Davis led Indiana to a 21-13 record, a runner-up finish in the Big Ten postseason tournament, and a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Davis ultimately spent six seasons in Bloomington, compiling a 115-79 record, winning one Big Ten title, and earning four NCAA berths.
March 21, 2002 – One year to the day after being named IU's permanent coach, Davis was on the sidelines for one of IU's biggest NCAA Tournament upsets. Led by 24 points and 15 rebounds from Jared Jeffries, Indiana shocked No. 1 seed Duke 74-73 in the Sweet 16 in Lexington, Ky. Indiana overcame a 17-point first-half deficit against Coach Mike Krzyzewski's team, and the victory was finally secured when Jay Williams missed a potential game-tying free throw with 4.2 seconds remaining.
March 21, 2008 –Dan Dakich's run as Indiana's interim head coach comes to an end as the Hoosiers are bounced from the NCAA Tournament by Arkansas, 86-72, in Raleigh, N.C. Dakich took over the IU program following Kelvin Sampson's dismissal in February, and led Indiana to three wins in his first four games. But following an opening round defeat to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament, IU was easily dispatched in the first round of the NCAA tourney. While D.J. White (22 points, 9 rebounds) and Armon Bassett (21 points, 7 assists) had strong performances in the NCAA opener, Eric Gordon was held to eight points on 3-of-15 shooting, including an 0-for-6 effort behind the 3-point arc.
March 21, 2016 – Two days after winning the second NCAA Tournament game in program history, Coach Teri Moren's Hoosiers pushed No. 2 Notre Dame before falling 87-70 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. After falling behind by 10 at halftime, Indiana cut into the lead and trailed by only two following a Lyndsay Leikam lay-up with 2:47 remaining in the third quarter. But Notre Dame responded with a 15-2 run to push the margin to 15 and squash IU's hopes of an upset. IU was led by Alexis Gassion and Karlee McBride, both of whom scored 17.
