Hoosiers earn four NCAA selections for second straight year
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The NCAA announced Tuesday their 47 at-large selections for the 2018 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Among those joining the 283 automatic qualifiers are two Hoosiers, Devin Skatzka (174) and Cole Weaver (141), whose team-leading seasons have earned a trip to the biggest weekend of the year.
Skatzka and Weaver join Indiana juniors Elijah Oliver (125) and Bryce Martin (165), who earned automatic bids at the Big Ten Wrestling Championships last weekend in East Lansing, Michigan.
Weaver becomes Indiana's 171st wrestler in program history—the 56th under head coach Duane Goldman—to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Skatzka is the second active Hoosier (Elijah Oliver, 2016-18) to qualify for the NCAA Championships in every season of his varsity career.
The Hoosiers will bring four wrestlers to the NCAA Championships in back-to-back seasons for the first time since taking five to the 2013 NCAA Championships before bringing four grapplers to the 2014 edition.
The at-large selections were made by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee using the following criteria: head-to-head competition, quality wins, results against common opponents, winning percentage, rating percentage index, coaches ranking and qualifying event placement.
Weaver and Skatzka amassed quality seasons, each ranking inside the top-20 in a majority of polls while finishing one spot outside of an automatic bid in their postseason tournaments.
