Hoosiers Just One Shot Off the Pace Through 36 Holes at Boilermaker Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana – The Indiana men's golf team brought some momentum with them up I-65 to the Boilermaker Invitational this weekend. Through 36 holes, that momentum has only increased despite the weather conditions deteriorating throughout Saturday.
The Hoosiers posted team scores of 287 (-1) and 293 (+5) to finish at 4-over par and all alone in third place, just one shot behind Kent State and Northwestern at 3-over par. Purdue and Toledo are one shot behind Indiana.
Over the past two tournament, Indiana has been playing better golf across the board and the scores are reflecting it. Leading the charge on the course are redshirt junior Jake Brown and sophomore Brock Ochsenreiter. Both of them brought their own momentum into the tournament and both are within the top 7 after two rounds.
Brown, who is coming off a second-place finish at Irish Creek last weekend, is in fourth place out of 93 golfers this week after he posted round of 68 (-4) and 73 (+1) on Saturday. At 3-under par, he is just two shots behind the leader at 5-under par. The 68 in round one is tied for the second-best round of the tournament so far and his nine total birdies are tied for third-most in the field.
For Ochsenreiter, his momentum stems from a tie for second and tie for 12th in his last two tournaments. He is tied for seventh after two rounds on the Kampen Golf Course on the campus of Purdue University after carding scores of 69 and 74 to sit at 1-under par. Ochsenreiter's opening round began with a flurry, posting three birdies in his first four holes. Then he birdied three of his final six holes to get back to four-under par.
While the wind and rain picked up late in round two, that's when redshirt junior Jack Sparrow turned up his game. He started the day with a 76 round one, a round that could have been much better but he found trouble on the par 5 sixth hole and recorded an eight. Aside from that blemish, he had just three bogeys, two birdies and 12 pars. In round two, he closed with a 1-under par 71 and was once again steady, using four birdies and three bogeys to tie for 30th individually.
Evan Gaesser got off to a rocky start in round one with a 78 but rebounded in round two to post a 75 and is tied for 70th at 9-over par for the tournament.
Brendon Doyle was the opposite of Gaesser, getting things started with a 74 in round one before carding an 80 in round two. He is tied for 73rd at 10-over par.
Competing as an individual is freshman Ethan Shepherd, who opened with a 76 in round one and then came back with an even par round of 72 in the afternoon. He is tied for 41st individually heading into the final round.
The final round gets underway at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Follow live scoring on GolfStat.com.
