Indiana Rowing Gets Strong Team Performance to Finish Fourth at Clemson Invitational
4/14/2018 11:40:00 PM | Women's Rowing
CLEMSON, South Carolina – The Indiana Rowing team entered the Clemson Invitational ranked 17th in the USRowing/CRCA Coaches' Poll this week and were going to be racing seven other teams ranked in the top 20. When the dust settled, the Hoosiers placed fourth as a team with 111 points, one point ahead of No. 13 Southern California and 14 points ahead of No. 15 Washington State.
The Hoosiers were one of four teams to have the 1V8, 2V8 and 1V4 advance to the "A" final in Clemson on Saturday and also saw the 2V4 advance to their "A" final.
"I thought this was a great performance by our whole team," said Indiana head coach Steve Peterson. "Led by the second-place finish by our first varsity four, all of our crews stepped up this weekend. Over the past couple weeks, we have not been performing as consistently as we know we can. So, the results this weekend are more indicative of what our athletes are capable of.
"We know we have areas where we can continue to improve," Peterson continued, "but for us to be able to finish ahead of other great national programs like USC and Washington State shows the potential this young team has. We look forward to having a couple of weeks to prepare to defend the Dale England Cup at home on April 28 and then finish the regular season strong at Big Ten Championships."
The 1V4 once again led the way for IU, as they used a time of 7:15.36 in the morning session to finish second in their heat behind Virginia and their time of 7:13.05, but it was good enough to move the Hoosiers to the "A" final. In that final on Saturday evening, Indiana trimmed over 10 seconds off their time – posting a 7:05.10 – to finish second to Ohio State and beating Virginia in third place by two seconds.
The 1V8 and the 2V8 had similar paths to their fifth-place finishes in their respective "A" finals on Saturday. The 1V8 closed with a time of 6:41.05 in the morning to take second behind Virginia. Then in the final, the Hoosiers' time of 6:19.00 was good for fifth place. Just like the 1V8, the 2V8 took home second place in their morning heat and then recorded a fifth-place finish in the final with a time of 6:29.48.
The fourth boat in an "A" final was the 2V4, and they too finished second to Virginia in the morning heat and then came back to place fourth in the "A" final with a time of 7:20.84.
And rounding out the IU contingent was the Novice 8, who crossed the line with a time of 7:17.11 in the morning heat. Then in the "B" final later in the day, they cut that time to 7:08.08 to finish seventh (14th overall) in the Novice 8/Third Varsity 8 category.
The Hoosiers will not race next weekend before they return to the water on April 28 to defend the Dale England Cup on Lake Lemon against Duke, Notre Dame and Penn. A complete racing schedule will be announced at a later date.
