IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Indiana men's tennis team (15-11) opened the Big Ten Tournament with a 4-0 first round win over the Michigan State Spartans.
"The doubles point was pretty tight," head coach Jeremy Wurtzman said. "We were down a break at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles and were able to fight back. It was good to face some adversity in the doubles point and we carried that momentum over into the singles matches."
Led by sophomore Bennett Crane and senior Keivon Tabrizi and sophomore Zac Brodney and senior Raheel Manji, the Hoosiers took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots.
In singles, IU won all of its first sets with Manji winning a first set in a tiebreaker at the top spot. With a 6-2, 6-2 win, Brodney took the No. 5 spot. The Hoosiers made it 3-0 when freshman Andrew Redding took the sixth spot 6-4, 6-1. Redding improved to 8-1 on the year.
As the No. 111 ranked player in the latest ITA singles rankings, junior Antonio Cembellin clinched the match for IU with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The No. 5 seed Hoosiers continue Big Ten Tournament action on Friday morning when they face No. 4 seed Minnesota. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. ET in Iowa City, Iowa.
